EAST INDIAN DINING
always offers an interesting
culinary experience, no mat-
ter how many times a per-
son may enjoy it . . For
the second time since its
opening in December of
1975, we visited the Royal
Bengal (they spell it Bangal)
on Nine Mile Rd. across the
street from Kresge's, about
half-block west of Wood-
ward in Ferndale.
As before, the belief by
many that East Indian
dishes are "too spicy" was
proven very false . . . in an
array of food which proved
most palatable . . . Coupled
with the extreme politeness
of Oajib Ullah, one of the
owners, who waited on us,
the fare served from Royal
Bengal's small but immacu-
late kitchen was tastefully
delightful . . . Of course,
there are those folks who
like their food spicy . . .
Just say the word and the
ge-nts who own Royal Ben-
gal will 'be most eager to
please •. . Oajib Ullah, by
the way, will be 22 years
old, but has already owned
two restaurnats before this
. . . First was in 1968when
only 16 years of age.
Our first appetizer was
papadam, a vegetable wafer,
followed by two types of
soup, mulligatawny and co-
conut . . . then pakura
(vegetable fritters), somasa
(meat or vegetable turnover)
. . . two breads: puri (deep
fried puffed bread) and par-
ata (multi-layered grill
bread), entrees: chicken do-
piaza, shrimp bhuna and
beef bhuna; pillaw rice,
chutney, cucumbers and
sour cream, onion and chut-
ney, bindi bhajee (mixed
vegetables) and begun bha-
jee (egg plant) . . . Then
came the desserts . . . jila-
bee (deep fried flour dipped
in honey), gulab jam (a soft,
very delicious fruit-like deli-
cacy) and rosogula (a
cheese ball that tastes like
anything but cheese.)
The Royal Bengal is a
"must" for those who enjoy
delicious food with a flavor
all its very own.
NO RUMOR ANY-
MORE . . . that Buddy's
Pizza is looking for a north-
west location . . . The popu-
lar spot on McNichols and
Conant, responsible for in-
troducing the square pizza
to Detroit, will retain its
east side locale (been a land-
mark fixture since 1938)
when a northwest site is
found.
In the kitchen at Buddy's
Pizza on various shifts, are
seven women and two men
. . . The head chef, Dick
Brown, has been at the
place 10 years . . . One Of
the gals is a 25-year veteran
. . . and the five main
women classed as the hard
core of its operation, have
all been at Buddy's over five
years . . . Next time you go
there, be sure to taste Sa-
bina Nobili's meatballs . . .
They have a taste like none
other . . . and are the kind
she has become famous for
over the spaghetti you get at
Buddy's . . . Sabina started
there about 1960 or 1961 and
has become an unbeatable
kitchen stalwart.
•
HARD TO BELIEVE
that April is just around the
corner . . . and almost time
again for the Channel 56 TV
auction, April 2 through
April 10 . . . About 30 per-
cent of 56's annual opera-
tion budget is provided by
funds raised during the auc-
tion . . . This will be num-
ber eight and we will
very happily offer our serv-
ices as an auctioneer . . .
not very good, but trying
. . •. If attorney Henry Bas-
kin would give us lessons,
perhaps we'd do better . . .
Anyhow, we'll let you know
when our time slot will be so
you can give some shekels
to this fine cause .. . (hope
we get some better mer-
chandise for our people this
year.)
GAYLORD & HOLI-
DAY at the Golden Coach
on Van Dyke north of 12
Mile, for two more weeks,
are still master showmen
. and easily rank with
the super entertainers of
our day . . . Their fabulous
versatility is an experience
you shouldn't miss if possi-
ble . . . Ronnie Gaylord,
Burt Bonaldi and Don Rea,
pianist and conductor, have
been together since the 50's
when they were known as
The Gaylords . . . with
three golden (million seller)
records and innumerable
"near misses" to their credit
. . . The .goldies were "Tell
Me You're Mine", "From
The Vine Came The Grape"
and "The Little Shoemaker"
. . . Everything they do at
the Golden Coach, from
impressions to comedy to
song stylings is excellent
presentation . . . and their
"Fiddler On The Roof" med-
ley is one of the best we've
ever heard . . . Cover re-
mains $3 Sunday and
Wednesday through Thurs-
day . . --. Saturday night it's
$4 . . . They're well worth
the cover!
MAX'S DELI on South-
field and 13 Mile celebrates
its 10th anniversary this
month . . . Max and Belle
Horenstein remember
watching their place go up
nail-by-nail at the then un-
completed Country Corners
Shopping Center . . . since
the doors opened they ap-
proximate selling one-half
million pounds of corned
beef, 100,000 pounds of pas-
trami, 100,000 pounds of
-salami, 109,500 breads . .
Max and Belle (he always
comes first says good wife
Belle) have used most of the
same suppliers since open-
ing.
NEXT BIGGIE affair by
Town and Country Club on
Southfield is March 21 . . .
with comic Al Bernie and
ork leader Eddie DeSantis
heading the "Steppin' Into
Spring" shindig.
YOU'LL BE ABLE to
see 'Larry Santos on the
Dick Clark American Band-
stand TV show over Channel
7, Saturday, at 12:30 p.m.
. . . Larry is doing a fine
job appearing at Angel's
Hour Glass on W. McNi-
