Jerusalem. The official, who
was a member of a papal
delegation that participated
last week in the first inter-
faith dialogue with Jews
ever held in Jerusalem, said
the Pope now only desires
international guarantees for
preserving the status of the
holy sites in that city.
A Vatican Press spokes-
man said that Father De
Contenson was not compe-
tent to discuss political mat-
ters and added that there
has been absolutely no
change in the Holy See's
policies.
At the conference, Father
De Contenson offered a
written apology for dispar-

Catholics to Pray
for Syrian Jews

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
prayer for the Jews of Syria
will be among the general
intercessions of parish mas-
ses across the -United States
on Sunday, during the Sab-
bath of Concern sponsored
by the Synagogue Council of
America, beginning today,
it was announced by Rabbi
Joseph H. Lookstein, presi-
dent of the Synagogue
Council.
It is the first time that the
U.S. Catholic bishops have
officially requested that
Catholics throughout the
nation recite a special
prayer during Mass on be-
half of Jews suffering op-
pression and injustice.
Jews across the U.S. will
observe the Sabbath of Con-
cern- by offering prayers for
their Syrian brethren as
well as hearing special ser-
mons on Syrian Jewry. In
many communities inter-_
faith programs, including
Protestant, Catholic and
Jewish .are planned.

Canadian Minister
to Keep - Politics-
Out of UN Confab

Visiting Israel after a
tour of several Arab lands,
the Canadian Minister said
he had met with many Arab
leaders who shared his de-
sire "to keep to substance"
at the Habitat conference: -

Danson, who is Canada's
only Jewish minister, said
he hoped the conference
would result in a "greater
sharing" of Israel's settle-
ment and technological ex-
perience with other coun-
tries.

altered Jerusalem's skyline.
He said, meanwhile, that
the Vatican supported the
right of Jews to a secure and
independent state, but made
no response to Ashkenazic
Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren's
appeal for the Vatican to
formally recognize Israel.
Goren, who met with the
group, said he was amazed
at the Vatican's failure to
recognize Israel and ex-
pressed hope that normal
relations would be estab-
lished. He also insisted that
cooperation between Jews
and Christians must be on a
humanitarian rather than a
religious level and that ef-
