Tuesday evening at Shaarey Zedek, Amichai was introduced by Arthur Rubiner of the synagogue's cultural commission and - Feb. 27 — To Dr. and Mrs. Barry S. The famed Jerusalem poet read translations of his work for about an hour, giv- ing some explanations of a series of poems based on members of his family, war and peace, and his beloved Jerusalem. Amichai told the audi- ence that Jerusalem is a living city, not an historic relic, and gently admon- ished Israeli authorities for heavy expenditures on archeological digs. Saying the money would be better spent on education, Ami- chai said, "People come from throughout the world and scratch up the dust. I am part of this great dust pile, and feel I am as good as these marble pieces they find." He said too many visitors treat Jerusalem as a mu- seum, rather than as a liv- ing city, and he described his attitude toward Jerusa- lem as a "love-hate" rela- tionship. In response to a question following his reading, Ami- chai said that the relation- ship between Jewish and Arab writers in Israel gives hope for peace. "Hope there is, and maybe that's all, but maybe that's enough," he said. "Writers are breaking away from old concepts, and maybe this will lead them to break away from other con- cepts and lead to peace. Hope is the big thing in this case. "But I am too much of a realist to believe that this will be an immediate thing," he said.
