Dutch neighbor in the filmi-

lowered her standards from
Academy-Award winning,
humanly touching perform-
ances to low-grade comedy.
A performer of such great
dramatic power could re-
strain her antics if she chose
to pick parts such as the
yente in "Diamonds" and
the overprotective Jewish
mother in the current offer-
ing of "Next Stop Green-
wich Village."
"Next Stop, Greenwich
Village" is the latest of Paul
Mazursky's personal come-
dies, with the central char-
acter, a Jewish boy from
Brooklyn, bearing some re-
semblance to the writer-di-
rector, co-producer's own
youth. Following his highly
acclaimed, "Blume in Love"
with George Segal, and
"Harry and Tonto," that
won an Oscar for Art Car-

now turns his cameras on
Larry Lapinsky, his clan
and girl friend. Films such

Village" are outdated. We
had enough of Jewish ster-
eotypes!
Lee J. Cobb, who suc-
cumbed to a heart attack
at the age of 64 in his San
Fernando Valley home in
Southern California truly
has been a giant of the
stage and screen — and
more so an upright and
forthright human being.
Almost crushed by the
House Un-American Activi-
ties Committee hearings a
quarter of a century ago, he
rose to new fame on the
stage as "King Lear;" and on
the screen in such films as
"Exodus," "On the Water-
front," "The Exorcist" and
on television in the series
"The Virginian."
Cobb's father worked in
the printing plant of the
Jewish Daily Forward. Lee
got his first introduction to
the stage on New York's
Second Avenue; he later
married Helen Beverly,
famed actress of the Yid-
dish stage.
