YEARS BACK when it
was called M Green's, peo-
ple looked upon the eatery
as a really superior restau-
rant with an extensively ver-
satile menu that ran from
assorted hors d'oeuvres to
wonderful baked Alaska
. . . At one time, 5,000 re-
quests were filled for then
Chef Alfred Zach's favorite
recipe of calves liver saute,
bernaise, on a local cooking
show . . . Although Green's
was generally regarded as a
quality restaurant, where
price was no object, one of
the most popular entrees
was the chopped sirloin
steak with mushroom sauce
at around $2.
Then Al Green brought
Cantonese vittles to the
East Side . . . He reached
out to Trader Vic's Honolulu
store for his chef, and for
bartenders, hired a couple
of boys away from Don The
Beachcombers, also in Hon-
olulu . . . Between the ex-
otic drinks, served in
strange and wondrous ves-
sels and made with 151
proof rum, and the huge
portions of succulent
Chinese food, Al's new Ha-
waiian Room was a smash.
Nov called The Old Place
on Jefferson off Chalmers in
Grosse Pointe Park, it is
owned by Diamond (that's
his real name) Phillips, a
fine, quietly gracious and
delightful gentleman whom
his employes call "a real
gem of a person" . . . Dia-
mond bought it from the
late Al Green in 1966 after
Al had legitimized it from a
speakeasy in 1933.
Although the name has -
been changed, it still re-
tains the fine beautifully
elegant decor of yester-
years . . . with soft toned
walls, antiques (old fash-
ioned bath tub, high but-
ton shoes, etc. hanging
from the ceiling) and in-
teresting paintings . . .
The very fine head maitre
d' at night, William Jerni-
gan, is still there . . . Jer-
nigan, as he has been
fondly called for over 22
years at the spot, is as
much a fixture there as the
beams and rafters that
make up one of Detroit's
finest restaurants.
The Old Place has not
only been redecorated, in-
cluding an entirely new
entrance and a new enter-
tainment policy that pro-
vides for dinner dancing
. . . the really big news for
Detroit diners is the new,
extensive menu that pre-
sents a specialization in sea
food of almost every possi-
ble variety.
Only one other restaurant
comes close to approaching
the 44 different sea food de-
lights now listed on the Old
Place menu . . . (this
doesn't count the three or
four daily house specialties
that reflect seasonable
availabilities) . . . Short of
reading the entire menu,
you will get a good idea of
the variety now available at
the Old Place when you
learn that the restaurant
serves at least eight differ-
ent fin. fi.sb_e_n_trees every
day . . . and allows you to
order lobster in 10 different
variations . . . For those
that favor the "sea and
shore" dishes, there are six
combinations from which to
choose . . . And instead of
one, there are two kinds of
sea food platters.
Our waiter at the Old
Place was very polite, effi-
ciently attentive and smil-
ing Ernie Pryor . . . who
brought us Manhattan clam
chowder, filets of herring in
sour cream on a bed of fresh
lettuce, salad, baked potato,
scampi a la mode with crab-
meat in cream sauce, and
"home-made" apple pie with
cheddar cheese . . . It was
a most delicious meal in a
very delightful atmosphere
extremely conducive to good
dining . . . A very pleasant
addenda to the fine dining
was Ernie bringing us a
small portion of sherbet to
clear the taste buds before
your main dish is served.
If you enjoy class, you'll
enjoy The Old Place.
FEELINGS ISN'T just a
song . . . it's also a four-
musician group that opened
a month engagement at The
Interlude on E. 12 Mile last
Tuesday.
ERRATA . . . Larry
Santos stars in the Hot
Fudge TV show . . . but
producers are Burry Hurd
and Bob Elnicky . . . It is
directed by Bob Lipson.
WE LIKE THE way
waitress Karen Evans waits
on you and what she writes
on the back of your break-
fast check at Sutton Deli,
Lahser and 9 Mile . . .
"Have A Great Day!"
THE ADVANCE Nosh-
erie in the Advance Building
has been sold . . . New own-
ers have already taken over
from Ronnie Forman.

"Hang Your Lamp In The
Window," "My Lady To
Love Me," "Stone's Throw
Away" and an original enti-
tled "I Think I Like You."
