The article, published by Novosti News Agency, was characterized by State De- partment spokesman Rob- ert Funseth as "distorted, inaccurate and in poor taste." At one point the article says "the U.S. senators are clearly acting under pres- sure of the Zionist-Israeli lobby." Dore Schary, the former head of production at Met- ro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and Academy Award-winning) screen- - writer and playwright, GOODSTEIN will receive the 1976 Weil Award from JWB foi his "distinguished contribu- tion to the advancement of American Jewish cul- ture." Under Smith's ten- ure, the Wilkes-Barre JCC has won national recogni- tion for its numerous crea- tive programs which were adopted by Centers across the nation. Israel Teams May Add Non-Jews By HASKELL COHEN (Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.) - The Israel Basketball Federation has passed a new ordinance permitting Israeli basketball teams in the National League to play a non-Jewish player during the regular league competi- tion. This is confined to one non-Jew to each of the teams in the big league. At the present time Is- raeli teams are permitted to use two non-Jewish resi- dents in European Cup com- petition. Most European teams have been employing one non-resident as a mem- ber of their national team with the option of playing a second non-resident per- former in Cup play. This has proved to be a decided advantage to most of the countries who particpate in European Cup competition. For example, Real Madrid Vatican, WCC Join Jews' in Jerusalem Inter-Faith Parley JERUSALEM (JTA) — Meetings here recently be- tween world. Jewish schol- ars and representatives of the World Council of Cjiurches and a delegation from the Vatican have be- come the focus of attention, not because such contacts are new but because this is the first time that either the Protestant WCC or the Vat- ican has agreed to partici- pate in an inter-faith dia- logue in Jerusalem. The representatives of all three bodies in Israel spent an informal weekend to- gether at Kibutz Lavi where the Christian visitors learned about the religious kibutz movement. The meetings were mainly of an ideological na- ture and are intended to examine subjects common to Judaism and Christian- ity. of Spain, perennial cham- pion, always has two Amer- ican players in addition to several naturalized Ameri- can citizens who now live permanently in Spain. All of the Italian teams, the Swiss teams and French teams, as well-as the Swed- ish teams, regularly employ non-residents. Apparently the time has come for Israel to do like- wise, albeit the cost is -going to be a heavy one, and one questions the ad- visability of expending huge sums of money for American basketball_ play- ers when the country is in the throes of economic de- spondency. Up to now only Maccabi Tel Aviv has brought in non- Jewish American ballplay- ers to play with their teams in the European Cup scram- ble. Basketball is a big busi- ness to Maccabi Tel Aviv and they have quite a bit of money in their treasury. None of the other Israeli National League teams as yet has been able to capture the fancy of Israeli basket- ball fans as have the Mac- cabi T-A five. These people work at it constantly and have scouts coming over every year to tsy and pick up the two best h-Jewish players they can. The teams from the various kibutzim in the Na- tional Basketball League will find it very difficult to NY to Stage Israel Parade NEW YORK (JTA) — The 1976 Salute to Israel Parade will take place June 13 in New York, it was an- nounced by Paul Maas, di- rector of the parade. The parade is a project of the American Zionist Youth Foundation and supported by more than 100 major Jewish organizations in the metropolitan area. The only organization in the National League in the Holy Land who should have the wherewithal of pay for non-resident play- ers is the Hapoel group, the sporting arm of the Histadrut. Now that they have had a little smell of success in the Courage Cup, in their first year of competitioh, maybe Tel Aviv Hapoel will begin to look for non-residents in the same manner in which the Tel Aviv Maccabi club does. It is too early here to de- termine whether the project is going to be a successful one or not, but one thing is assured, there is never a dull moment in basketball so far as Israel is concerned, and the Basketball Federation manages to see to it that the picture doesn't change. 11 1 1 AND ' 1111112111 111 1 AT pm THE WORKMEN'S CIRCLE num lung 11117110'311 pm4.E.1 11•111Y , Y13 THE CELEBRITIES Of THE YIDDISH THEATER AND CONCERT STAGE IN THE UNITED STATES AND ISRAEL , Iv 2 1213 11,1 .
