related to the story of
Purim.

It is designed to remind
us of the evil that lurks in
the hearts of men and
which seeks to destroy us
and would destroy us were
it not for the Grace of the
Almighty.

Since the festival of
Purim is one which is dedi-
cated to the victory over that
evil, the portion of the Torah
which bids us to beware of
this evil is read on the Sab-
bath before Purim. Since
this portion begins with the
word "Zachor," the Sabbath
is named as the Sabbath Za-
chor or the Sabbath (on
which we read) Parshath
Zachor.
The Purim feast is de-
layed until the late after-
noon instead of taking place
earlier like theleast of other
festivals.
There are a number of
reasons advanced for the
timing of the Feast of
Purim. Many claim that
this was done so that the
people would see to it that
they distributed gifts to the
poor and exchanged "por-
tions" with their friends
during the earliest part of
the day. Delaying the feast
to the late afternoon gives
them a chance to do this.

their meals can be con-
sumed earlier in the day.
On Purim it may be done,
and actually should be
done on the holiday.

Some claim that the feast
was ordained partially to
commemorate the feast to
which Esther invited the
King and Haman. Her feast
took place in the late after-
noon because all Jews were
fasting for three days and
she did not participate in
the feast until the last two
hours of the day.
Since the feast served to
be the turning point of Jew-
ish destiny, our current
Feast of Purim is delayed
until late in the day to re-
mind us of the circumst-
ances of Esther's historic
parties which brought about
the salvation of her people.

Total 20,000

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The State Department said
that it will study a news
report that the number of
Palestine Liberation Army
troops in Lebanon total up
to 20,000 men, many of
them disguised Syrian sol-
diers.
However, Department
sources indicated that they
doubted the Department
would discuss officially the
number of PLA troops in
Lebanon.
The State Department
has estimated that about
2,000 PLA troops entered
Lebanon from Syria last
month in support of the
Moslem-Palestine Libera-
tion Organization's side in
Lebanon's civil strife.
