Centenarian Sophie Epstein,
Devotee of Jewish Causes

Funeral services were
held Wednesday afternoon
at Ira Kaufrhan Chapel for
centenarian Mrs. Sophie
Epstein, long active devotee
of Jewish women's and reli-
gious causes, who died Mon-
day at age 106. Her son-in-
law, Dr. Abraham Rogoff,
delivered the eulogy.
Rabbi Howard Lifshitz
officiated at the funeral
service. The eulogy, by Dr.
lgoff, was an impressive
Jbute to a mother-in-law
by a son-in-law who revered
her religious devotions and
her dedication to many so-
cial services.
The many tributes to the
memory of the centenarian
included messages from the
municipality of Southfield
and Mayor Coleman Young
of Detroit.
Born in Bialystok, Mrs.
Epstein came to the U.S. in
her middle 50s. Her hus-
band Samuel, was a long-

time Detroit shohet,' prior to
his death in 1942 at age 80.
A son, Elias Epps, died less
than a decade later.

Robert T. Roberts, a fur
designer and president of
Furs by Robert, died Feb. 23
at age 68.
Mr. Roberts owned two
stores in Detroit and Troy.
The firm was established in
1872 and Mr. Roberts was
president for 43 years.
Women's Wear Daily, the
fashion industry publica-
tion, cited him as the
world's leading fur de-
signer, and he won awards
for excellence in London,
Paris and New York. He
also was cited by the
NAACP for providing em-
ployment and advancement
opportunity.
He was a past president
of the Detroit Furriers
Guild and a member of the
Michigan Fur Conservation
Association. He was a mem-
ber of the Standard City
Club of Detroit and Frank-
lin Hills Country Club. He
resided at 19160 Woodston
Rd.
Mr. Roberts leaves his
wife, Audree; a son, Robert
W.; a daughter, Mrs.
Charles (Jae Dene) Levy of
New York City; three broth-
ers, Edward, Michael and
Wallace; and three grand-
children.

Prof. Moses Lutzki,
Judaica Cataloguer

NEW YORK — Moses
Lutzki, formerly professor
of bibliography at Yeshiva
University for 20 years, died
Feb. 20 at age 81.
Born in Russia, Prof.
Lutzki was educated at Ox-
ford University and later
joined its Bodleian Library
as a specialist in Hebrew
manuscripts. Prof. Lutzki
was known for describing
and deciphering medieval
Hebrew manuscripts.
He had identified several
manuscripts written by
Maimonides, the 12th Cen-
tury philosopher. He be-
came a cataloguer of He-
brew manuscripts for the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America in 1940.
