The Jewish position,
Shapiro observed, "becomes
reduced in circumstances
where the economy and de-
mocracy are weak. It is
therefore a genuine Jewish
concern that the United
States be strengthened for
itself as well as for the abil-
ity of American Jews to
come to the aid of Israel and
Jews in need everywhere."
The need, he stressed, is
to overcome the apathy and
the indifference to the dem-
ocratic process.

NEW YORK — Veteran New York journalist Irving
Spiegel, left, was honored by leaders of American Re-
form Judaism at a recent meeting of the executive com-
mittee of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations
for his 50 years as a reporter. Rabbi Alexander M.
Schindler, right, presented Spiegel with a limited edi-
tion of "The Psalms" published by the UAHC. In mak-
ing the presentation, Rabbi Schindler lauded the New
York Times reporter as the possessor of a "rich, Jewish
heart and spirit who has devoted his energies and profes-
sional talents in helping to create a greater awareness
among all people about the meaning of Judaism, the
work of our people and Israel."
