Zayde Is Super-Sleuth • in New Detective Mystery Seventy-two-year-old Max Guttman is an unlikely candidate for the role of de- tective, and for that reason he is successful. Guttman is the hero of Arthur D. Goldstein's mys- tery "Nobody's Sorry He Got Killed," published by Random House. Guttman, who has participated in the solving of two previous mur- ders, proves to be successful again when a co-resident of the Golden Valley Senior Citizens Center requests his help. The co-resident, wealthy Jessica Stone, major stock- holder in Armstrong Indus- tries, asks the spry old gen- tleman to investigate--a murder for which her granddaughter, Susan Eliot, has been charged. Guttman accepts the case, but not without his daughter's attempts to stop him. However, the director of the center con- vinces her that it is a pro- ject beneficial to Guttman since it keeps him busy. In an uncomplicated, ea- sy-to-follow narrative, the author relates how Gutt- man and his team of Irregu- lars — residents of the cen- ter, including Mrs. Kaplan, Mr. Mishkin, Mrs. O'- Rourke, Miss Brady and Mr. Carstairs — undertake the job of investigating the mur- der of Harry Vincent, the man with whom Mrs. Eliot worked (at Armstrong In- dustries) and with whom she was having an affair. Barr as its Canadian representa- tive. The new office will be located in the Commercial Union Tower, Toronto Do- minion Centre. Israel Discount Bank Limited, established in 1935, is one of the three largest commercial banks in Israel. Its assets exceed $3.5 billion, with 208 branches throughout Israel and a main branch in New York City. The bank ranks among the 200 largest commercial banks in the free world. - dustries, and although they are met with disbelief, the employes almost readily of- fer information about Vin- cent's activities and their re- lationhips with him. When Guttman finds that most people didn't like Vincent, the case becomes more com- plicated. What makes the book en- joyable is its fast pace, a sprinkling of Yiddish and the incredibly logical way Guttman discovers the mur- derer. Goldstein's "Nobody's Sorry He Got Killed" is an unusual tale of a Jewish grandfather's special adven- ture, and makes for pleasur- able leisure reading. — H.P.
