Harvard U. Plans to Expand Existing Judaic Program CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (JTA) — Plans for a $15 mil- lion Harvard University Center for Jewish Studies, centralizing and expanding the university's existing wide variety of Judaic de- gree programs, was an- nounced by president Derek C. Bok and Fellows of Har- vard College. Bok said gifts and pledges totalling $2.1 million, in- cluding a grant of $1 million from the Lucius N. Littauer Foundation of New York, have been raised toward the $15 million goal. Gerald Weinstock of jahlimont, N.Y., chairman national committee of more than 200 prominent citizens which is spearhead- ing the program, said that among the projected cen- ter's purposes were to ex- pand instruction and re- search in Judaica at Harvard; to integrate Judaic studies — languages, litera- ture, history, culture, phi- losophy and religion — "on an inter-departmental scale"; and to stimulate fur- ther Judaic studies "at other schools of higher learning throughout the United States, both by example and by providing visiting re- search and teaching posi- tions, symposia and collo- quia." Noting that the center will provide expanded Ju- daica instruction for un- dergraduates and doctoral students, Weinstock said that the anticipated funds would provide for creation of six endowed professor- ships in a variety of fields of Judaica, plus new funds and curatorships, for the Judaica collection now in the Harvard College Li- brary. He said it would also in- clude establishment of 24 endowed graduate fellow- ships; creation of an admin- istrative center to coordi- nate seminars, symposia and public lectures; support of visiting scholars; and creation of a publication program. Bok cited the university's "special tradition" in Jewish studies, referring to the teaching and scholarship of the late Prof. Harry Wolf- son, who held the first en- dowed chair of Jewish stud- ies in a secular institution of learning in the world, the Nathan Littauer Professor- ship of Hebrew Literature and Philosophy established at Harvard in 1925. Following Wolfson's re- tirement in 1958, Isadore Twersky was named Lit- tauer Professor. Bok said Harvard set up a second Judaica profes- sorship in 1970, with gen- eral university funds, held since 1970 by Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi as professor of Hebrew and Jewish his- tory. Bok said a variety of courses ancillary to Jew- ish studies have been of- fered at Harvard for years and that Harvard has the only endowed Judaica cu- ratorship in the world, the post of Lee M. Friedman Bibliographer in Judaica created in 1962 and held since then by Charles Ber- lin. Weinstock said the cam- paign to raise the $15 mil- lion goal was a one-time endowment effort "to insure income in perpetuity for continuing Judaica scholar- ship" at Harvard. Among the national hon- orary committee members were William Haber, for- mer dean of the University of Michigan and honorary president of American ORT and Mandell L. Berman and Toby Citrin of Detroit. Avineri said after- wards that he would resign his post as dean of the Uni- versity's political science faculty on April 1 and begin his duties at the Foreign Ministry then. Avineri's appointment by Foreign Minister Yigal Al- Ion aroused controversy in government and political circles because of the pro- fessor's outspokenly "doveish" views and his posi- tion that Israel should state its willingness to negotiate with any Palestinian group that recognizes the Jewish state, including the PLO. Social Welfare Minister Zevulun Hammer of the National Religious Party urged that the vote on Avineri be postponed for one week. He was sup- ported by Defense Minis- ter Shimon Peres, Police Minister Shlomo Hillel and Transport Minister Gad Yaacobi of the Labor Alignment and Interior Minister Joseph Burg of the NRP. They were overruled by the majority, however, and when the vote was taken, only Hammer cast a nega- tive ballot. Peres, Yaacobi and Burg abstained.
