draw attention to these
problems and place them
high on the agenda of cur-
rent world concern."
Former Israeli Premier
Golda Meir described the
Soviet government's Jew-
ish policy as "irrational,
illogical and defying un-
derstanding".
Mrs. Meir told a press
conference Wednesday aft-
ernoon, "One fails to under-
stand what prompted the
Soviet Union to turn the
Jewish question into a ma-
jor international issue". She
said she was certain that ap-
peals to public opinion can
and will help. "When I hear
people saying that this (the
conference) provokes cold
war I can not help wonder-
ing what warm peace is
like." The former Israeli
premier stressed, however,
that Jewish action "is not
directed against the Soviet
Union or anyone else. It is
directed towards and for the
benefit of Jews."
The Palestine Liberation
Organization plans to hold a
"world conference" of its
own in Brussels, to expose
"the true face of Zionism"
and describe the plight of
the Palestinians. An Arab
League spokesman said the
PLO gathering would open
Wednesday, but the meet-
ing was then postponed to
next spring. A Belgian gov-
ernment spokesman said
the PLO conference needed
no special government au-
thorization as long as it was
not contrary to public mor-
als or Belgian interests.
The Soviet Union is also
sponsoring a number of
propaganda meetings aimed
at countering the effects of
the Soviet Jewry conference.

'Seven Lean Years'
Seen for Israel

NEW YORK (JTA ) —
Predicting that "Israel has
seven lean years ahead with
peace just a dim hope," Is-
rael's new consul-general in
New York nevertheless as-
sured the national leader-
ship of Hadassah that his
country will come through
because of its reserves of
strength and the support of
the Jewish people.
Uri Ben-Ari, addressing
the opening plenary session
of the mid-winter confer-
ence of Hadassah in its new
headquarters, said there are
four basic realities which
must be recognized:
Oil and Petro-dollars give
an advantage to the Arab
• countries which Israel does
not have; the national inter-
ests of the two or three su-
perpowers limit the com-
plete freedom of decision of
their client states such as Is-
rael; anti-Semitism is once
more resurgent — in the op-
pression of Jews in the So-
viet Union and other coun-
tries and in the series of
actions and statements at
the UN culminating in the
recent resolutions equating
Zionism with racism; and
real peace in the Middle
East cannot be achieved
until the Arab people — not
just governments — accept
a Jewish presence in the
area and recognize the state
of Israel .

The Soviet news agency, No-
vosti, called two press con-
ferences for Soviet Jewish
immigrants who left Israel
and the U.S. to return to
Russia.
An
ultra-Orthodox
group believed to be asso-
ciated with the Satmar
Rebbe in Brooklyn, an-
nounced it will hold a pro-
test meeting to counter the
Soviet Jewry conference. -
The group claims that So-
viet Jews do not want to go
to Israel and that they ob-
tain no assistance from
American Jewish organi-
zations.
Three-quarters of a mil-
lion Soviet Jews want to
leave the Soviet Union and
emigrate to Israel, Stanley
H. Lowell, chairman of the
National Conference on So-
viet Jewry, said in reply to
questions from newsmen.
He said the figure "was
discreetly indicated to us by
the Soviet authorities them-
selves in one of their calmer
moments."

Lowell said the situation
of Soviet Jewry "has defi-
nitely become part of the re-
lationship between the U.S.
and the Soviet Union."
A recent Soviet immi-
grant to Israel, Dr. Alexan-
der Voronel, warned that of-
ficial Soviet anti-Semitism
has increased "sharply and
alarmingly" since the Yom
Kippur War. Voronel, who
was granted permission to
emigrate to Israel last year
after a three-year wait,
spoke of "growing pressure
on those who apply to err''
grate, including the use )
enforced military conscrip-
tion, arrest, trial and prison
sentences."
Thirty recent Soviet Jew-
ish immigrants to Israel are
attending the conference.
Among them is Mery
Knoch, whose husband is
serving a 10-year prison
term for treason, and Sylva
Zalmanson whose husband,
Eduard Kuznetsov, is serv-
ing 15 years on the same
charge.

JDL Leader Kahane Ousted
From Brussels Conference

BRUSSELS (JTA) —
Rabbi Meir Kahane, the
Jewish Defense League
leader, was prevented
Wednesday from entering
the conference on Soviet
Jewry, overpowered by
guards and finally arrested
by Belgian security agents.
Rabbi Kahane is being held
at police headquarters and
will probably be expelled
from Belgium on an expul-
sion order issued against
him five years ago, at the
time of the first Brussels
conference.
The conference spokes-
man said after the incident
that the presidium had de-
cided a month ago not to ad-
mit him as a delegate. The
spokesman said this deci-
sion has been approved by
the steering committee.
Rabbi Kahane entered
the conference hall in the
afternoon. The security
guards posted outside the
building failed to identify
him as he entered together
with a crowd of newsmen
and television cameramen.
Recognized, once inside
the building, conference
guards threw him to the
floor and had him carried

out by Belgian police.
Conference spokesmen
say thay had not asked for
police intervention but eye
witnesses say the confer-
ence guards called the pol-
ice.
The Belgian authorities
decided to expel Kahane in
February 1971 at the re-
quest of the Brussels-I or-
ganizers.
Kahane was prepared to
offer a 10-point program
which includes an imme-
diate end to all talks by the
West with the Soviet Union,
a trade embargo, an end to
general tourism to the
USSR, a cessation of all
cultural exchanges, and the
suspension of the Soviets
from international organi-
zations and activities.

Syrian Attack
on Israel Seen

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Defense Minister Shimon
Peres said in a radio inter-
view that Israel should be
prepared for a war with
Syria which may break out
later this year.
Peres also spoke of the
possibility of combined mili-
tary action by the forces of
Syria with those of Iraq
and Jordan. Even Egypt
may be sucked into such a
war, Peres added.
According to the Defense
Minister, Syria might
choose to attack when the
mandate for the stationing
of the UN force on the Go-
lan Heights expires May
30.
