Rabbi Klein's `Responsa' Book
Significant Rabbinic Literature

By ALLEN A. WARSEN

The genre of rabbinic
literature known in Hebrew
as "She'elot u-Teshubot"
(questions and answers) and
in Latin "Responsa Pruden-
tium" had its origin in the
Geonic Period.
According to "The Jewish
Encyclopedia" the "res-
ponsa" connote "the written
decisions and rulings given
by eminent rabbis, teachers,
or heads of academies to
questions addressed to them
in writing."
"Responsa and Ha-
lakhic Studies" by Rabbi
Isaac Klein (Ktav Publish-
ing House, Inc., 1975) pur-
ports to deal with religious
contingencies. However,
the author, a Conservative
rabbi, in the 'preface' to
his book states: "A num-
ber of these papers are
dated and would need
some revision in order to
be brought up to date. In a
few cases, my opinion has
changed, and some suffer
from the fact that much
new material on the sub-
ject has since become
available. After due delib-
erations, I thought it best
to leave the material as it
was when presented."
This statement presents
this reviewer with an en-
igma: which "teshubot" are
still valid and which dated?
We will, therefore, only
comment on those matters
