The Olde Attic . . . restau-
rant take-over of the re-
cently closed spot on South-
field just north of 12 Mile
Rd. . . . Isaac Manoukian is
running operations for
breakfast, lunch and dinner,
with a family-style menu
seven days a week.
FROM THE TIME
pleasant top-notch waitress
Judy Pappas brought us a
menu in a frame between
two pieces of glass, until it
was time to leave, another
visit to John Laffrey's
Steaks-On-The Hearth,
Seven Mile and Telegraph,
revealed a consistency . . .
The small, 74-seat eating
spot with its cozy atmos-
phere is still good . . . Man-
aged by personable Eino
"Al" Peterson, Laffrey's is a
restaurant mainstay of our
area . . . Judy brought us
sliced beef tenderloin and
mushroom caps swimming
in a rich burgundy wine
gravy . . . Cream of tomato
soup first, side of spaghetti
with a tasty sauce and salad
made by her from the fine
salad bar with everything in
it but the brick walls . . . If
there is any criticism of
John Laffrey's Steaks-On-
The-Hearth, it's of the park-
ing lot attendant who, with
pessimism, says, "Hope you
enjoy yourself." . . . Also,
Al and John might consider
putting in false windows to
alleviate the feelings of
claustrophobia stricken
folks.
SHARON WILLIAMS,
songstress at a top down-
town nitery, is the Friday
and Saturday thrush after 2
a.m. with Vince Shane Trio
at the Bonfire on W. Eight
Mile . . . After 1, nightly,
it now has salami and eggs,
bagels, cream cheese and
after-hour sandwiches.
ANSWERING THE
QUESTION of where to go
on a Sunday night, the Holi-
day Inn of Southfield will
test a Las Vegas style, en--
tertainment-dinner combi-
nation starting Sunday on a
once-a-month basis . . .
Opening the 350-diner show
room will be The Vogues
. . . For the dinner crowd,
$17.50 price and 5:30 show
includes steak, tax and tip
. . . For non-diners, a 9:30
show at $12.50 includes two
cocktails and snacks.
OUR INITIAL visit to
Russell's Steak House on
Grand River and Times
Square, between Bagley and
Washington Blvd., will no
doubt be repeated over and
over again . . . In more than
50 years of continuous fam-
ily ownership, it has grown
from a humble one-store,
24-hour chili and bar-b-q
parlor into a busy down-
town restaurant . . . The
seating had doubled in 1948,
plus a vastly enlarged
kitchen . . . Then 1956 was
redecoration of the entire
place . . . and today it is a
comfortable, well-appointed
spot with soft lights, mod-
ern decor and no traces of
the old Russell's.
But the Cockels family
did more than refurnish the
exterior of Russell's, they
also changed its heart . . .

with excellent steaks, chops,
fish, fowl and roasts . . .
One thing has not changed
from the old place . . . That
is Russell's justly-famous
spare ribs . . . It was Rus-
sell's spare ribs and inci-
dently, the addition of a li-
quor license then, that
helped transform the old
place into the new.
Now seating about 125,
Russell's is the place where
sports figures like Hank
Greenberg, Rudy York,
Bobby Layne, Goose Goslin,
etc. always hung out . . .
And Joe DiMaggio once
called- his steak the best he'd
had anywhere . . . Our fine
waitress Rita Filece brought
us delicious fare . . .
creamy marinated herring,
excellent creamed mush-
room and onion soup, lamb
chops, garlic toast, side or-
der of ribs and cottage fried
potatoes . . . We also tried
pieces of the porterhouse
and filet mignon steaks and
have to agree with Joe Di-
Maggio.
Russell's is open for din-
ner every evening except
Saturday . . . Downtown
Detroiters still love Rus-
sell's as a favorite lunch spot
. . . Irene Cockels is the
most charming and gracious
hostess-owner . . . someone
you'd expect to head such a
place as Russell's . . . both
ooze with warm pleasant-
ness.

JNF Builds Park

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Jewish National Fund
has begun work on a large
new recreational park sited
at one of Israel's scenic
beauty spots: the southern
bank of the Sea of Galilee.

Table Tennis
League Proposed

The National Golf and
Tennis Show will be held

Tennis Federation presi-
dent, is seeking youth to
join a school table tennis
league.

competition will be con-
ducted by world class play-
ers, who will instruct and
