Grand Rapids' Jewish Mayor Is Applauded Grand Rapids Cong. Aha- vas Israel has spearheaded congratulatory functions on behalf of the entire Grand Rapids Jewish com- munity in honor of Mayor Abe Drasin. Drasin, long active in the Grand Rapids Jewish com- munity and in state-wide Jewish affairs, was inaugu- rated in January after win- ning election in November. A past president of Aha- vas Israel, Drasin is a for- mer teacher in the congre- gation's Hebrew school, and with several others was in- strumental in changing the synagogue from Orthodox to Conservative. Drasin has twice served as president of the Julius Houseman Lodge of Bnai Brith and is a past presi- dent of the Michigan past president, member of the board and chairman of the allocations committee of the Grand Rapids Jewish Community Fund. Drasin liquidated his suc- cessful Wolverine Hide Co. after 35 years in business to teach government at Grand Rapids Creston. High School for two and a half years.
