LUFT (Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.) HOLLYWOOD — Joseph E. Levine, who resigned from Avco-Embassy two years ago to devote himself to the prrduction of large- scale independent motion pictures, was in town to cast the principal American roles for his forthcoming film "A Bridge Too Far" from the novel by Ryan. It deals with an unsuc- cessful parachute attack of Allied forces at Arnhem during World War II. Wil- liam Goldman has written the screenplay. Levine told this columnist that he put a price tag of $20 million on the spectacular venture, the largest amount of money ever spent on one single motion picture. The budget for blockbusters in general has increased considerably during the last two years due to our high rate of infla- tion. Yet, the budget for "A Bridge Too Far" is espe- IN CONCERT FEB. 20, 21, 22 JERRY VALE WARREN WOODS COMMUNITY THEATRE 13400 E. 12 Mile, Warren Just W. of Schoenherr Also • COMIC TONY VALLO • WARREN WOODS COMMUNITY HIGH CHOIR With JOE MAIN Conducting The JOHN TRUDELL ORCH. In addition, the fees for inter- nationally recognizable stars has skyrocketed. The only two principals actually set are Britain's Michael Caine and Scot- land's Sean Connery. "Ziemia Objecana" (Land of Promise) is a Polish- made film which neither boasts Jewish artists nor any relationship to the land of Israel. The picture, directed by Andrzej Wajda, who created in the aftermath of World War II "Ashes and Dia- monds" and "Kanal," the latter dealing with the Pol- ish uprising in Warsaw against the Nazis, now turns to the city of Lodz at the turn of the century and qualifies for inclusion in this column with his totally negative aspects of Jewish life under the czarist re- gime. Though Wajda last year denied that anti-Semitism was intended and he even had toned down the ghetto characteristics of Jewish money lenders and repulsive hypocrites inherent in the novel by Nobel Prize-win- ning author Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont, on which the picture is based, we found the film shocking for the callous indifference to human sufferings of the past 30 years. After millions of Jews were murdered by the Ger- mans with the help of Pol- ish collaborators in the 1940s, the time should have passed to depict their fathers posthumously as wild-eyed corrupt business profiteers who exploited the textile mill workers together with Polish nobil- ity and German business- men. Factually, this was im- possible because. there was no financial merger of this kind allowed in the Russian provinces at that time. Cinematically "Land of Promise," photographed in a Rabelaisian mood and immense epic vistas, reflect- ing the long days in the vast factories and the nights or orgies of the newly-rich speculators, shows the bril- liance of Andrzej Wajda's visual concept in handling camera set-ups, movements, staccato cutting and musi- cal interludes. This makes the picture even more dan- gerous as a weapon of Iron Curtain propaganda! `As You Like It' Open at Hilberry • • Friday, February 6, 1976 27 Lieut.-Col. David Salis- support.
