Arab Students Compromise
on Hebrew U. Guard Duty
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Hebrew University au-
thorities have reached a
compromise with Arab stu-
dents who have refused to
stand guard duty with their
Jewish dormitory mates "as
a matter of conscience."
The compromise, ac-
cepted by the 200 Arab stu-
dent residents on the cam-
pus is expected to open the
way to the return of nine of
their number who have been

expelled since the dispute
began.
The compromise in ef-
fect accepts the Arab stu-
dents' offer to stand "first
aid shifts" in lieu of guard
duty but it also requires
them to check "sites which
will be determined ahead
of time, to guard univer-
sity property and warn of
danger to the welfare of
the students."
The alternate duty is open
to the entire student body
but it is primarily the Arabs
who are expected to take ad-
vantage of it.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
rael has a new party, the
Labor-State Movement (La-
am).
The new party, which has
eight Knesset seats, is made
up of three groups within
the Likud opposition — the
State List, a splinter from
Rafi; the Independent Cen-
ter, which split from the
Free Center; and the Labor
Movement for a Greater Is-
rael, made up of former
Labor and Mapam mem-
bers.
The party's main ideology
is the right of Israel to all
the land it now holds. It de-
clared that there shall be no
sovereign state between the
Jordan River and the Medi-
terranean except Israel.
of the Detroit's Federa-
tion campaign and plan-
ning staff from 1951 to
1956.
Federation President
Citrin said, "Detroit
has been most fortunate
in its professional lead-
ership. For the past 28
years, we have bene-
fited from the expertise
and wisdom of Bill
Avrunin . . ."
"Other
Federation
staff members have gone
on to lead Federations in
other communities,"
added Citrin. "We feel
strongly, as do the other
communities who have
chosen Detroit staff to
head their federations,
that Detroit's profession-
als are the best in the na-
tion. We needed to look
no further than our own
staff to fill the top two
positions at Federation.
"We're also extremely
pleased that Bill and
Frieda Avrunin will stay
in Detroit upon retire-
ment. Our community
will continue to benefit
from their presence and
their involvement."
