BB Urges Reduced UN Aid

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Bnai Brith's board of gover-
nors urged that the United
States and other Western
nations "selectively reduce
their involvement in and fi-
nancial support of United
Nations volunteer agencies
as a means of opposing the
Arab and Communist blocs'
running roughshod over the
UN Charter."
The Bnai Brith ruling
body, concluding its mid-
winter meeting, in Wash-
ington, cited the continued
politicization of UNESCO in
calling for such sanctions
against that agency. It
asked that "the intellectual
and artistic community"

BB Women Cite
American Heroines

WASHINGTON — In
honor of America's Bicen-
tennial, Bnai Brith women

ries of three Revolutionary

mocracy" program.
The three heroines are
Abigail Minis, one of the
first Jewish settlers in the
colony of Georgia; Sybil
Ludington, "the teenager
who outrode Paul Revere;"
and Eliv,,beth Freeman, the
first slave to be freed in the
colony of Massachusetts.
Bnai Brith women chap-
ters throughout the country
are bringing the life stories
of these women to school
children through portrait
dolls and narration.

"Bnai Brith's disenchant-
ment with the United Na-
tions does not mean aban-
doning support of its fund-
amental purposes or hopes
that its credibility and
moral authority in world
affairs can be restored,"
said David M. Blumberg,
Bnai Brith's president. "But
we strongly endorse the de-
cision of Congress to reas-
sess America's relationships
to the UN."
Meanwhile, Rabbi Marc
H. Tanenbaum, national
interreligious director of
the American Jewish
Committee, testifying on
the moral aspects of Amer-
ica's foreign policy, de-
clared that "the very sur-
vival of the human family
depends on a rational ap-
proach to arms sales, as
well as to the intensifica-
tion of universal disarma-
ment measures."
"Given the absolutely cat-
astrophic nature of nuclear
war," he said, "we must ask
whether our government
and its allies have done
enough to restrict their sale
of nuclear reactors to unsta-
ble countries and to coun-
tries of uncertain political
persuasion."
In other actions, the Bnai
Brith governors appealed
for Congressional approval
of the Administration's re-
quest for $2.3 billion in aid
to Israel; called on Western
nations to oppose efforts to
alter UN Resolutions 242
and 338; called the "tragedy
in Lebanon" an object lesson
on the validity of the PLO as
a legitimate body capable of
providing "a reasonable and
sincere answer to the Pales-
tinian problem"; and de-
nounced the continuing har-
assment of the "remnant
Jewish communities" in
Syria and Iraq, and called
for "intensified efforts" to
effect diplomatic interven-
tions in their behalf.
The board adopted a $23.7
million budget — a 5.3 per-
cent increase over last year
— to finance Bnai Brith's
wide range of programs and
projects in 1976. Almost
half of the amount — $11.1
million — was allocated for
the organization's sponsor-
ship of Hillel Foundations
on 350 college campuses, the
40,000-member Bnai Brith
Youth Organization and a
professionally-staffed ca-
reer counseling program
conducted in 20 metropoli-
tan areas.

That what has been, shall
be; and that what has been
done, shall be done — there
is nothing new under the
sun. (Ecclesiastes I.)
