THE TRANSFORMA-
TION is unbelievable . . .
from former Paradiso Villa
to new Banyan Tree restau-
rant and Elephant disco-
theque on Long Lake Rd.
and Livernois . . . It is the
epitome of elegance and so-
phistication . . . The two
rooms of about 250 each are
separate but combine a fas-
cination seen only in To-
ronto and New York.
Sitting in "the best seat in
the house," a booth which is
definitely our favorite of
favorites, pleasant and con-
genial waiter Jerry "Lefty"
Johnson brought us the fin-
est piece of medium rare
prime rib of beef we'd had in
a long time . . . expertly
prepared by Executive Chef
Doug Derello . . . But not
before we had enjoyed some
artichokes in Hollandaise
sauce, fried eggplant and
visited the beautiful salad
bar with its ice cold dishes
. . . The salad bar decor in
itself is something to see
. . . built off a huge hearth
filled with mammoth loaves
of bread . . . and each salad
ingredient in interesting
wicker baskets . . The
touch of excellent chef Der-
ello is apparent . . . and
owners Norm LePage, Bill
Coombe, Bob Posch and
Jerry Kotlier have given this
area of the country some-
thing most unusual.
It was Saturday evening
and from our magnificent
vantage seat on the lower
level, we gaped with awe at
11 p.m. . . . This is when a
"wall opened up" to join to-
gether flashing disco lights
and well selected music in
beauteous rhythm rock not
outlandishly loud which
some -discos erroneously
seem to feel they must have.
The quiet decor lighting,
elegant dining in a most
relaxing and beautiful at-
mosphere is already a Ban-
yan Tree trademark . . .
with trees in the dining
room and wicker baskets of
all shapes on the walls to
give a tropical air . . . Jack
Neal, a popular favorite per-
sonality around town, is
evening manager . . . and
Steve Poirier is one of the
waiters who loves to dance
so much he can't walk out of
rhythm once the disco wall
opens . . . He dances while
waiting on tables.
The Banyan Tree and Ele-
phant Disco have only been
open a couple of months but
are much more than owners
Norm, Bill, Bob and Jerry
dreamed it would be . . .
The sophistication and then
some is there . . . with peo-
ple of all ages enjoying both
rooms . . . The fascination
is reality and indeed a big
winner combination.

the atrium lobby floor . . .
More than 650 live plants
hang gracefully, as well as
seasonal flowers . . . A
12-foot chandelier descends
from the ceiling with 6,400
bulbs in use.
LaRotisserie is the gour-
met restaurant . . . LePre-
lude a gourmet lounge . . .
Kafay's Place a garden res-
