Editor, The Jewish News: A short time ago, 1,000 of the leaders of the Young Leadership from the United States visited Israel. These young people, for most of whom this was their first visit to Israel declared their slogan to the "Koah Lema'- an Yisrael" — Strength for Israel. While claiming that their economic and political con- tributions took first prior- ity, this in fact implied a double negative as regards aliya: They claim that if Jews immigrate to Israel, the economic and political contributions of American Jews will decrease sub- stantially, as there won't be enough Jews in the U.S. to make contributions; the economic and social situa- tion in Israel is extremely bad according to them, and prior to their backing aliya, conditions in Israel must improve. In my opinion, their ap- proach is wrong. If they were truly committed, they would be able to demand from themselves and from many others the ultimate commitment of aliya as the realization of true Zionism. Our situation will only improve drastically if Jews immigrate to Israel. These olim can then help to over- come these problems. Immi- grants who come to Israel Jamaican Jewry Reported Thriving Editor, The Jewish News: The small Jamaican Jew- ish community, once almost done in by assimilation, to- day still thrives . . . I advise all Jews visiting Jamaica to locate the synagogue and community center on Duke St. in Kingston, and express solidarity with our fellow Jews. The synagogue itself is an authentic, sand-floor, Se- phardic-style edifice dating from the 1880s, while sev- eral tombstones of promi- nent Jamaican Jews pre- served in the courtyard have dates reaching into the early 1700s. The community center houses a fascinating exhibit on the history of Jamaican Jewry, and has extensive artifacts and documenta- tion of historical interest. In finding Shaarey Shalom, ask for the "Jew's church" on Duke St. (The word synagogue is either unknown or in- comprehensible to most Jamaicans.) Until recently, a Jew sat as one of Jamaica's minis- ters, but with the resigna- tion of Eli Matalon as head of the Ministry of National Security and Justice, Jews are once again rarely found in high governmental office or other positions of high visibility. R. Dunitz Brown strengthen the links be- tween the country and the Diaspora and emphasize the mutual responsibility be- tween Jews in Israel and those who live outside Is- rael. Uzi Narkiss Director General, Aliya Department, The Jewish Agency Jewish Unity, Boycott Urged Editor, The Jewish News: Nov is the time for Jew- ish unity. Since England has turned in her thinking and sided with the PLO, it is time for a general boycott of that country, her products, and all other countries that have sided with the PLO. When the sale of their ex- ports drop and hard times hit, maybe they will come to their collective senses. Albert J. Wykoff `UN Helps Spread PLO Propaganda' WASHINGTON — Mi- chael Schiff, a Chicago news photographer, entered Le- banon as a German Catholic and snapped pictures of "a United Nations unit provid- ing free propaganda services (with United States money) for the PLO." PLO officials told him the plan was for Syria even- tually to take over Labanon in order to gain its deepwa- ter ports, and that Lebanon would then be used as a staging area for future at- tacks on Israel. Schiff's pictures and re- port appeared in the Lerner Newspapers, and his report was placed in the Congres- sional Record, Dec. 12, by Rep. Edward J. Derwinski (III.). `Non-Traditional Course for Women NEW YORK — Yeshiva University's Stern College for Women has termed its Shana Program for "non- traditional" students a suc- cess. The program, in its second year, draws women from various educational levels who may not other- wise have been able to at- tend college. They participate in a one- year curriculum of intensive Jewish studies.
