Rabbi Thaler emphasized
that the program is not de-
signed to prepare a child for
Bar or Bat Mitzva. But if the
child and the parents feel
the child can handle the ex-
tra work entailed in prepa-
ration for the rite, a special
ceremony is held.
He explained that pupils
could not master enough
material for a standard rite.
Rather, he said, the require-
ments are designed so they
master it. A private tutor
gives the candidates instruc-
tion to supplement what
they learn in the Sunday
classes.
In the synagogue's regu-
lar school program, a child
must attend the congrega-
tion school for five years
for the ceremony. A child
in the special program
must be enrolled mini-
mally for one year befoi.e

As background material,
guiding the reader to a
fuller understanding of the
current Middle East situa-
tion, "W-hose Jerusalem?
The Conflicts of Israel" by
Ronald Segal (Bantam
Books); retains great value.
Because of its extensive
resort to the background of
the Arab-Jewish conflict
and the many events that
have made history in that
part of the world, and.be-
cause of the struggle to
guarantee the success of the
Zionist aspirations, the
studies in Segal's work indi-
cate the extent of the fac-•

make this paperback signifi-

In the normal ceremony,
the candidate is given an
Aliya, and chants the bless-
ings before and after the
Haftara, in addition to the
Haftara. For a Bar Mitzva
candidate from the special
program, the requirements
must be modified.
Rabbi Thaler emphasized
the key role of the congrega-
tion in making the program
possible. The tuition of $125 -
per child does not cover the
cost of the program and a
few children receive scholar-
ships. He said the syn-
agogue sisterhood provides
a fund from which money is
used to make up the pro- -
gram deficit. Some congre-
gants make individual con-
tributions . and the
congregation provides a
home for the program with
custodial :services, lighting
and heating.
Moreover, Rabbi Thaler
said, parents of the children
are not required to be mem-
bers of the congregation,
which is a requirement for
those.parents whose chit
dren attend the regular
Hebrew school.

Much has happened
since this book first was
published, yet the data
herein remains important
as an implementation in
the presentation of the
analyses of the events that
have occurred during. Is-
ael's statehood and in the
preparatory years that
preceded that sovereignty.
Segal poses many ques-
tions relating to both Arabs
and Jews, and the Palesti-
nian problem is not ignored.
Of specific value are the
appendices, the tables with
figures relating to the unin-
terrupted presence of Jews
in the Holy Land, other fac-
tual data and documenta-
ries.
The war threats and the
problematic peace, the ob-
stacles to negotiations and
the international pressures
— these and many other
factors lend themselves to
additional utilization of
facts the student of the Mid-
dle East needs for knowl- _
edgeability regarding this
danger-infected' issue.

Lubavitch Group
Sent to Israel
NEW YORK — Twenty-
two Lubavitcher scholars
have left for a period of To-
rah study and communal ac-
tivity in Israel.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe,
Rabbi Menachem M.
Schneerson appointed the
rabbinical students as his
emissaries "to bolster the
morale of the Jews residing
in Israel in these difficult
times."
Eleven members of the
group will study in the Old
City of Jerusalem, and
eleven will reside in Safed.
The young emissaries will
spend a considerable
amount of time visiting and
reaching into other commu-
nities throughout Israel.

Aharonson's Fate
in Iran Confirmed
LONDON (JTA) — A sen-
ior British correspondent
who recently was iri Iraq
said that Dutch-born Jew
Alexander Aharonson was
hanged by the Iraqi military
junta last November, as re-
ported then in an Iraqi news
agency dispatch from- Bagh-

The Iraqi authorities
claimed subsequently that
Aharonson had been sent-
enced to death as an "Israeli
spy" but that the execution
had not been carried out.
The Iraqi authorities have
rejected all attempts by The

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Jewish National Fund
has brought in chemical-

fight against the mysterious
pine-tree-killer which is
threatening to denude many
of Israel's loveliest hillsides.
The killer disease, which
has baffled international

has become particularly

Jerusalem where the for-
merly lush forest glades
have begun withering as
pine after pine is attacked.
