"Fatherland or Promised
Land" subtitled The Di-
lemma of the German Jew,
1893-1914" by Jehuda Rein-
harz (The University of
Michigan Press) is a wel-
come addition to the litera-
ture dealing with the his-
tory of the Jews in Ger-
many.
The book consists of six
chapters, extensive chapter
notes, a comprehensive bib-
liography, and a splendid
collection of photographs.
The index was prepared by
Sister Claudia Carlen, li-
brarian of St. John's Provin-
cial Seminary.
It, however, does not start
with the year 1893 as the
subtitle indicates. Instead,
it begins with 1848, the year
the German Jews, thanks to
the Revolution of 1848,
gained rights of citizenship.

gulfed large segments of the
German population.
Nonetheless, the leaders
of German Jewry regarded
the anti-Jewish outburst as
a temporary phenomenon.
Rather than resist and fight
back, they preferred to keep
silent and proclaim their
loyalty to the Fatherland.
The campaign, however,
did not subside.
William Marr, the inven-
tor of the term "anti-Semi-
tism," in his pamphlet "Der
Sieg des Judentums ueber
das Germanentum" charged
that the Jews "had become
the dominant power in the
West and were destroying
the Teutonic nature of the
German state. He urged the
German people to resist the
Jewish conquest with all the
means at their disposal."

Adolf Stoecker, a Pro-
testant preacher, founded
the anti-Semitic "Chris-
tlichsoziale Arbeiter Par-
tei," and made anti-Semi-
tism respectable among
middle-class Germans.

The CV represented the
majority of the German
Jew. It fought prejudice and
bigotry and supported mor-
ally and financially political
parties and individual politi-
cians friendly to Jews. It
also tried to influence public
opinion through its publica-
tions.
Ideologically opposed to
the CV was the ZVfD, the
"Zionist Vereinigung fuer
Deutschland," founded in
1897, the same year the
First World Zionist Con-
gress was held in Basel,
Switzerland.

The founding of the ZVf-
D, as expected, was both
praised and condemned. It
established central offices;
acquired the "Israeli-
tische Rundschau" and
converted it into its official
national organ; founded
the publishing house, the
"Juedische Verlag;" and
before long became the
strongest branch of the
World Zionist Organiza-
tion.

Characteristic of this new
orientation is Buber's call
for "a renaissance of the to-
tal individual or ethnic per-
sonality, not a change of one
or another aspect of life . . .
(a) realization that to be a
Jew is to live a life of uncon-
ditional commitment, re-
jecting compromise, that
what counts are construc-
tive deeds, not abstract con-
cepts or theories."
In spite of the animosity
of the CV, it and the ZVfD
coexisted harmoniously for
about a decade and a half.
Then in 1912 conflict and
tension replaced peaceful
co-existence.
At first the conflicts were
confined to the Jewish
press, then in February,
1914 the anti-Zionists pub-
lished full-page advertise-
ments in the leading Ger-
man newspapers de-
nouncing Zionism. Among
the 500 signers was philoso-
pher Hermann Cohen.
The Zionists were out-
raged and protested.
The war of words a few
months later was replaced
by the First World War.

Idelologically, "Unlike

Heinrich von Treitschke,

Hermann Ahlwardt's

accusation shocked the Ger-
man public. As a result, "A
great scandal erupted, and
20 editions of the pamphlet
were sold within a few
weeks." Later it was discov-
ered that Ahlwardt's accu-

But the damage already had
been done.
