PLO Is Gaining Recognition
From West in United Nations

(Continued from Page 14)
Olof Rydbeck, the Am-
bassador of Sweden, said
the "interests and rights"
of the Palestinians had to
be given sufficient consid-
eration. He termed the
PLO "the most authorita-
tive spokesman for the
Palestinian Arabs."
Ambassador Shizuo
Saito, of Japan, urged recog-
nition of the "legitimate
rights of the Palestinian
people" and observed that
the Palestine problem was
no longer simply a question
of refugees.

In a similar vein, British
Ambassador Ivor Richard
stated that Israel has to
take into account Palesti-
nian nationalist sentiment.
But he added that "one-
sided actions" must be
avoided.
Meanwhile, Aharon Ya-
riv, a former Israel Cabinet
minister, warned that Israel
must be prepared for a shift
in American policy toward
recognition of the PLO and
the establishment of a Pa-
lestinian state between Is-
rael and Jordan within the
framework of an overall
Middle East peace settle-
ment.
Yariv, who just returned
from a six-week visit to
Washington to explain Is-
rael's needs for U.S. mili-
tary assistance, said he
detected the new direction
of American policy. But
this does not mean that
Israel has to accept it and
not fight it, he declared in
an interview on the army
broadcasting service.
The Mideast debate in the
Security Council has been
the stage for several sharp
exchanges between the
Chinese and Russian delega-
tions. Chinese delegate Lai
Ya-li charged that the So-
viet Union has "honey on its
lips and murder in its
heart," and demonstrated

the latter by sending "a
steady flow of manpower to
Israel."
Soviet Ambassador Jacob
A. Malik defended his gov-
ernment's allowing Soviet
Jews to emigrate to Israel,
asserting that "we let old
people, children and women
go to Israel but not military
units." He said the Chinese
delegate had an "inflamed
brain."

Sabbath Observers
Fight Blue Law

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
group of 20 merchants in
East Meadow, LI, who keep
their stores closed on Satur-
days have obtained a tempo-
rary restraining order to
stop Nassau County Police
from charging them with
the violation of Sunday clos-
ing laws.
The group, known as
Shop-A-Rama II, argued in
Brooklyn Federal Court last
week that they were closed
on Saturday to observe the
Jewish Sabbath and to force
them to close on Sunday
violates their constitutional
guarantees of religious free-
dom.
They claimed they were
constantly harrassed by pol-
ice who issued summonses
and seized their merchan-
dise.

Israeli Group Takes
Robin Hood Role

JERUSALEM
Hundreds of bottles of cook-
ing oil stolen from a She-
men company storeroom in
Jerusalem's Talpiot quarter
were distributed among
needy families in a Robin
Hood operation organized
by the Black Panthers and
the leftist Moked move-
ment.
According to the Jerusa-
lem Post, about 15 cases of
Shemen cooking oil were
removed from the store-
room, loaded aboard trucks
and distributed to families
in Jerusalem's slum neigh-
borhoods.
Black Panther and Moked
leaders accused Shemen and
other oil manufacturers of
hoarding the product until
the price goes up.
