Toronto Mayor Nathan Phillips
TORONTO — Nathan
Phillips, who liked to call
himself the mayor of all the
people, died in Toronto at
age 83.
NATHAN PHILLIPS
He was Toronto's first
Jewish mayor; he served
longer than any other To-
ronto mayor, and his 35
years on the City Council
was a Toronto record. But
he will be remembered best
as the mayor who made To-
ronto proud of itself.
According to the Globe
and Mail, .Mr. Phillips was
mayor from 1955-62, when
Toronto changed from a
shuttered-on-Sunday prov-
incial capital to a metropolis
bristling with high-rise
apartments, new hotels and
cultural developments.
Early in his first term he
decided that Toronto
needed a mayor who would
go out and "dangle destiny
at the people from the
front steps of City Hall."
In 1961 he was made a
Mohawk chief by a band of
30 Indian chiefs in full re-
galia at City Hall.
His thatch of white hair,
his close-cropped mustache,
his fine features and his
penetrating eyes behind
horn-rimmed glasses were
Leon H. Lewis
Leon H. Lewis, a former
attorney and past president
of Tam-O-Shanter Country
Club, died Jan. 8 at age 62.
Mr. Lewis, a 1937 gradu-
ate of the Wayne University
Law School, was a member
of the American and Michi-
gan Bar Associations, and a
former member of the Stan-
dard City Club of Detroit.
He was a native of St. Louis.
He retired 10 years ago
and began collecting an-
tique English furniture for
a local furniture firm.
He resided at 18083 Wil-
demere.
He is survived by his wife,
Shirley, a son, Steven and
:daughter, Susan, both of
'Chicago, and two sisters,
Mrs. Harry (Nadine) Sha-
berman and Mrs. Arthur
(Marion) Feldman of Or-
ange, Calif.
In Memory of a Truly
Beautiful Person
LILLIAN
MARLOWE
Passed away Jan.
14, 1960. Although
human life is too short
for our dreams, its
greatest moments
never die. Mother, you
were one of our great-
est moments.
With our love,

:
f
more familiar to Canadians
than the features of some
provincial premiers.
One of Mr. Phillips'
proudest claims was that he
helped make Toronto the
convention capital of North
America by promoting new
hotel facilities.
Mr. Phillips' monument
is already built. He con-
ceived the idea of an inter-
national competition
which produced the world
famous design by the late
Viljo Rewell of Helsinki
for the new City Hall. City
Council
unanimously
named the civic area in
front of the hall after him
— Nathan Phillips
Square.
Mr. Phillips was a Mason,
a member of the Canadian
Bar Association and Bnai
Brith.
