Elixir

There is not better tonic
for depression, no greater
elixir for whatever happens
to be wrong at the moment
that enthusiasm.
—Samuel .Goldwvn

Yet's. '017'e frio-r K. -?

NEW YORK — ORT, the
renowned Jewish organiza-
tion for Rehabilitation
through Training, will reach
the centennial of its found-
ing in czarist Russia at the
end of this decade. This is
an event which most cer-
tainly will be observed as
one of a significant land-
mark in Jewish life.
The exact time of its
founding is in doubt because
a greater part of its archives
were lost, not by careless-
ness but by the disorder and
confusion resulting from
the revolution in Russia and
the chaos ensuing from Jew-
ish flight from Hitler as his
hordes advanced in Europe.
Interestingly, there are
differences of opinion about
the philosophical elements
behind the formation of the
organization. One school of
thought was of the opinion
that ORT's emergence was a
logical by-product of the im-
pact of the Haskala move-
ment on Jewish living and
thinking. Others believed
that the new concept was
merely a practical response
to the need of meeting the
pressing economic problems
that were facing the Jews in
a society that repressed
them brutally.
In retrospect, what hap-
pened was that the time
had come for a new ap-
proach to Jewish liveli-
hood and productivity.
Jews, it must be remem-
bered, had never been av-
erse to using their hands
in labor. In fact, Jewish
history is replete with
tales of the dignity in
which the laborer was held
in the communities of Jew-
ish dwelling.
ORT, when it
was
founded, aimed at amelior-
ating the economic condi-
tion of the Jewish masses by
training them in skills and
trades that would enable
them to make a living by
working with machines in-
stead of living as luft-
menschen, as many of them
were forced to do in those
days. Its basic concept was
to create a bulwark against
poverty among Jews by
transforming them into
productive elements in so-
ciety.
Today, as it is nearing the-
centennial of its founding,

ORT

not only remains faith-
ful to its original dedication
but has, in fact, extended its
horizons and areas of func-
tioning. Today there vir-
tually is no viable Jewish
community outside the U.S.
that has not been affected
by ORT's technical and edu-
cational programs.

Israel Shows Art
of Mental Patients

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Some 100 pictures displayed
these days in Artists House
in Jerusalem have a some=
what frightening appear-
ance. Although they have
been drawn by different
painters they have one thing
in common — all were
drawn by mental patients.
The paintings made their
way to the exhibition hall by
the patient's physician, Dr.
Marcel Ashael of the Ka-
plan Hospital in Rehovot
and of the psychiatric de-
partment at the Hebrew
University, who regards
painting as one way to help
his patients.

ZOA Launches
Donor Drive

NEW YORK — A new
program has been inaugu-
rated by the Zionist Organi-
zation of America through
the Alufei Zion Fellowship
("Champions for Zion").
The purpose of the program
will be to create a perma-
nent elite corps of major
donors for ZOA.

Baltimore attorney Al-
leekA. Resnick will chair
the drive which seeks to en-
roll massive numbers of
contributors of $1,000 or
more throughout the United
States.
Resnick, a national vice
president of the ZOA noted
that enrollment in Alufei
Zion has gotten off to an en-
couraging start with 100
donors and he is confident
that the program will attain
its goal fdr the ZOA, which
has more than 114,000
members.
