Doves Seeking Peace With Arabs,

JERUSALEM —
A group of Israeli
peace proponents,
including former
General Matityahu

the Israeli govern-
ment to begin ne-
gotiations with "a
recognized and au-
thoritative body of
the Palestinian
Arab people."
The group of lef-
tist writers and
scholars called for
the establishment
of a Palestinian
state on the West

municipal administration president of the group.

Parley Due

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The National Committee on
American Foreign Policy
announced that a group of
leading public figures and
academicians will partici-
pate in a symposium on
"The Middle East Critical
Choices for America," to be
held Jan. 22-25 at the Wal-
dorf-Astoria Hotel in New
York.
The symposium will con-
sider the political, economic,
scientific and military as-
pects of the subject and will
also discuss the United Na-
tions and the Middle East.

the policy against negotia-
tions with the Palestinians.
"It is important for the
world to realize that this
division exists," he said,
"because only through dia-
logue and mutual modera-
tion can we arrive at a mo-
dus vivendi in the Middle
East."
Instead of boycotting the
Security Council debate,
Avnery said, "The govern-
ment should attend and par-
ticipate and do everyting it
can to encourage the moder-
ate elements within the
Palestinian movement."
"They need our support
as much as we need
theirs," he said.
Avnery said the group
would begin a campaign of
'newspaper advertisements
and public petitions to gain
support. The group also
plans to form branch _ es over-
seas in an effort to encour-
age what Avnery called
"open and official contacts
between Israelis and Pales-
tinians."

Pageant Too Costly

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel's financial woes have
forced this country to bow
out as host to its first Miss
Universe contest. The inter-
national beauty pageant,
scheduled to be held in Jeru-
salein next summer, will
have to find another site
because the Treasury
balked at allocating
$300,000 for the event.

This nation is likened to
the dust and is likened to
the stars. because if they de-
scend it is to the dust, and if
they ascend it is to the stars.
