MEET YOUR LEADER: The elected president of the
Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds becomes
in fact the president of the entire American Jewish commu-
nity. He is the elected head of the central body of the organ-
ized Jewish communities numbering over 800 in this coun-
try and Canada, embracing 95 percent of the Jewish
population.
Jerold C. Hoffberger, the newly-elected president of
the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, is
:symbolic of how deeply interested American-born Jews can
be in affairs of Jewish concern.
Hoffberger is a man with a warm .heart, with strong
Jewish feelings, with great devotion to Israel. He is deeply
concerned with Jewish continuity, with strengthening Jew-
ish identity and with the quality of Jewish life in this coun-
try. He is also concerned with human values in general.
He enjoys a national reputation as one of America's
younger business leaders; he is serving as director in more
than 10 companies and financial institutions, including the
Carling National Breweries, Inc., of which he is chairman
and chief executive officer. He is very active in the Johns
Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore — his native city — of which
he is a trustee, and in Sinai Hospital of which he is a mem-
ber of the executive board. He is also active in various civic
organizations.
He served as president of a Baltimore synagoguge and
he plays an important role in the Associated Jewish Chari-
ties and Welfare Fund there, of which he is a board mem-
ber. Nationally and internationally, he is a member of the-
board of governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel, and
chairman of its important committee on immigration and
absorption. He is a national chairman of the United Jewish
Appeal, a director of the UJA National Cabinet, and a direc-
tor of the United Israel Appeal. He is one of the American
delegates to the reconstituted Jewish Agency and a member
of the national committee of the American-Israel Public Af-
fairs- Committee which counteracts anti-Israel propaganda
in Washington. He also served as chairman of the executive
committee of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Among the important leadership positions he holds is
chairmanship of the Israel Emergency Fund. Prior to his
being elected president of the CJFWF, Hoffberger was
president of the CJFWF Institute for Jewish Life. His serv-
ice as head of the Institute had a very special meaning for
him as a continuation of the work initiated by his brother-
in-law, Irving Blum — whom he greatly admired — and
whose efforts led to the founding of the Institute. Mr. Blum,
a very active national Jewish leader, died after serving less
than a year as president of the Council of Jewish Federa-
tions and Welfare Funds.
COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY: Hoffberger's
election as CJFWF president promises important develop-
ments in the direction of strengthening Jewish life in this
country, particularly in the fields of Jewish education, in
combatting the erosion of Jewishness in the Jewish family,
and in checking the alienation of Jewish youth.
Another major task he foresees for himself is to in-
crease the participation of young Jews in Jewish communal
life. In this he anticipates maximum support from each or-
ganized community. He will seek to secure greater partici-
pdtion of young people in decision-making organs of each
community and to have greater involvement of young people
in community programs.

Prisoners Join Rabbi Kahane's Hunger Strike

NEW YORK (JTA)
Rabbi Meir Kahane, who is
serving a one-year sentence
in the Allenwood, Pa., fed-
eral prison, has been joined
by other prisoners in a hun-
ger strike demanding a
special diet of kosher food,
the Jewish Defense League
reported.
Meanwhile, two men and
two women who claimed to
be members of the JDL
were taken into custody
Sunday after the women
chained themselves to a ra-
diator inside the Mexican
Consulate in Philadelphia.
The four said they were
protesting Mexico's support
of the recent United Nations
anti-Zionism resolution.
