THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS January 9, 1976 S Israel, Saudi Arabia Arms Flare Dispute in U.S. Committee WASHINGTON (JTA) — The relative needs of Israel and Saudi Arabia for large scale infusions of U.S. mili- tary hardware has punc- tuated a dispute between two members of the House International Affairs Corn- mittee. . The matter came to a head Jan. 2 when Rep. Ben- jamin Rosenthal (D -NY) introduced a resolution call- ing for scrutiny of U.S. arms deals with SaUdi Ara- bia. Zablocki (D-Wisc.) introduced a reso- lution immediately after- wards asking Congress to disapprove the sale of 25 F- 15 fighter planes to Israel. Zablocki objected to the F-15 contract, said to amount to $600 million, noting that the proposal came at the same time that Rosenthal was opposing the sale of $1.5 billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabis. Rosenthal pointed out that "The Saudis, with their unlimited resources and market access, are under- taking a major expansion of their own forces along with generously supplying and bank-rolling the forces of all the Arab confrontation states. At the same time, the Israelis, with most lim- ited resources and market access, are attempting to modernize their aging air force." In his resolution question- ing the deals with Saudi Ar- abia, Rosenthal noted that the current sale before Con- gress would bring U.S. sales to that country over an 82-day period this fall to nearly $3.5 billion which could be "a record year" for such sales. The prime minister's Is- rael Bond conference will plan a program of action to increase the participation of Jewish communities abroad in alleviating the severe pressures on Israel's econ- omy resulting from a record high defense budget and a staggering balance of pay- ments deficit of more than $3.5-billion, according to Sam Rothberg, general chairman of the Israel Bond Organization, the central source of funds for Israel's economic development. For the first time in the 20-year history of the Israel Bond program, the confer- ence will meet in Europe as well as in Israel. The initial sessions of the 1976 Confer- ence will be held in Brussels on Sunday and Monday to focus attention on the new opportunities for wider Is- rael trade with Europe as a result of the agreement Is- rael signed early in 1975 with the Common Market that will lift all tariff bar- riers on Israeli goods by the middle of next year. Terrorists Are Jailed TEL AVIV (JTA) — A military tribunal in Gaza sentenced three terrorists to 25 years in prison for plant- ing a home-made bomb which blew up an empty tourist bus in Rishon Le- Zion. The three were from Khanyunis in southern Gaza. State Department projec- tions of "at least another billion, but if experience is any indication, that is a con- servative estimate." Rosenthal said U.S. arnis sales to Saudi Arabia total approximately half of the sales to all of the oil-produc- ing Persian Gulf states and more than a third of the $9 billion in sales to all coun- tries this fiscal year. Zablocki said that in of- fering his resolution "I want to make it abundantly clear that I recognize and support the preservation of the state of Israel.
