THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 44 January 9,1976 • Chajes' 2-Celli Composition Slated for Presentation at Helsinki Concert Julius Chajes, distin- guished pianist and director of the Jewish Community 1,000 Jews Flee Battle in Lebanon PARIS (ZINS) — Approx- imately 1,000 Jews, fleeing the civil war raging in Leba- non, have escaped to Europe with most of them arriving in France. According to re- ports, there now remain only about 1,200 Jews in Lebanon. Jean Rosenthal, chairman of the Representative Com- mittee of French Jews, de- clared that the French re- gimeis gMng entry visas to all Lebanese Jews who want to settle in France. Center Symphony Orches- tra, added glory to his ca- reer as a composer with a speedily fulfilled mission to prepare a composition marking the American Rev- olution Bicentennial at a concert in Helsinki, Fin- land. The uniqueness of his task is that, for the first time, he had written a com- position for two celli, to be played without piano ac- companiment. The composition was pre- pared for Italo Babini, solo cellist of the Detroit Sym- phony Orchestra, who was invited by the State Depart- ment in December to play a recital at the American Embassy. Babini was asked in September to represent The Jewish Community Center • of Metropolitan Detroit Detroit in a.culturai ex- change with Finland. After the program was submitted, Babini was asked about featuring an American work and he called Chajes to ask for a work for two celli to repre- sent the city of Detroit. The speed with which the composition, "Theme . and Variations for Two Celli," was suggested and the re- quest fulfilled is explained by Chajes: "Ten days ago he called Me at midnight and told me that he was asked to pre- pare a composition by a De- troit composer — would I be able and willing to write a seven-minute work for two celli (!), since Susan Weaver, also of the DSO, would be leaving with him. "He said that I would have two days time to give him the title of the compos- ition which he has to give JULIUS CHAJES to the State Department and one week to complete the work, so that he would have one week to prepare the work! He tried to con- vince me that it is impor- tant for me, for him, for Detroit, etc. "I 'asked him for 24 hours to think it over. The 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat is mentioned in the Midrash as the New Year of Trees (or Jewish Arbor Day), because at that period the sap begins to rise in the trees in the land of Israel. It is custom- ary on Tu b'Shevat to eat of the fruits which grow in Is- rael — figs, dates, the carob (bokser), nuts and also ap- ples — and to plant trees. The celebration of Tu b'Shevat dates back more than 2,000 years. For many years in Michigan, the whole month of Shevat has been observed as Jewish National Fund Month. This year Tu b'Shevat falls on the same day as Jewish National Fund Sab- bath (Jan. 17). Congregations in Detroit and throughout the state will observe the day by stressing the accomplish- ments of Jewish National Fund as the sole agency for the reclamation and reafo- restation of the land of Is- rael. JNF has planted more than 130 million trees in Israel. Thousands of students will plant trees in Israel at this time through JNF. The holiday period which I wanted to be a well- deserved vacation for me I spent writing the variations for Babini — the work is completed and Babini will see to it that is is published after his return from Eu- rope."
