A resolution to enter into direct negotiations with the Federal Republic of Ger- many was passed in the Knesset by a small majority after stormy street demon- strations staged by the He- rut opposition and a heated three-day debate. The Ger- man delegation first met with the Israel delegation at The Hague on March 21, 1952. The delegation of the Claims Conference, headed by Moses Leavitt, was in charge of the negotiations on individual claims for in- demnification. Israel reduced her claim to $1 billion against the Fed- eral Republic of Germany alone. She reserved her right to claim the balance from East Germany (German Democratic Re- public), which so far has re- fused any payments deny- ing her responsibility for the Nazi-crimes, the Ency- clopaedia Judaica reports. On Sept. 10, 1952, after six months of negotiations, an agreement between Is- rael and the Federal Re- public of Germany was signed at Luxembourg by Moshe Sharett and Kon- rad Adenauer. The agree- ment was ratified and , came into effect on March 21, 1953, after a delay caused by the Arab states efforts to prevent ratifica- tion. The Federal Republic of Germany undertook to pay an amount of $850,000,000 in goods, of which $110,- 000,000 was earmarked for allocation by the Claims Conference. This $845,- 000,000 was to be paid in an- nual installments over a period of 14 years (between April 1, 1953, and March 31, 1966). Thirty percent was to pay for Israel's crude oil purchases in the United Kingdom. With the balance of 70 percent, Israel was to buy ferrous and nonferrous metals, steel, chemicals, in- dustrial and agricultural products. The agreement was car- ried out by the Federal Re- public of Germany both in letter and in spirit. The re- You're invited 20% Off •invitations •centerpieces •stationery Phyllis Billes 559-4343 . Just Marilyps SPORTSWEAR BOUTIQUE 2 TUNIS (ZINS) — West- ern diplomatic circles are saying that it is only a mat- ter of time until the leftist Moslems in Lebanon subdue their Christian antagonists and thereby extend Soviet influence in the Middle East. The Christian world ob- serves from afar the bloody clashes in which their co- religionists are engaged and can only find some consola- tion in the call by Pope Paul for both sides to retain their former peaceful coexistence. But the chances of such hap- pening are almost nil. The situation in Lebanon can evolve in one of two directions: . (1) The Moslems will carry out a blood bath against their Christian neighbors along the lines of the massacre of the Christian Sudanese by the Moslem - authorites in that country, and thus take over control of all of Leba- non; or (2) in case of a compromise, Lebanon might be partitioned into two states — one Moslem 3 3 3 50% to 75% OFF Iran Is Shipping Supplies to Israel Despite Pressure 3 3 CHICAGO — Syria has put pressure on the Shah of Iran to cut off oil supplies to Israel, but he has refused, according to Newsweek. He has also turned down a request to allow a Pales- tine Liberation Organiza- tion office in Teheran. The Shah is anxious to maintain good relations with the Arab . countries (Iran, though Muslim, is not Arab), but he does not to break a promise he made to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger last fall: a guar- antee of Israel's oil require- ments in return for with- drawal from the Sinai oilfields.
