Agudath Israel Unit Blasts BJE for Play Endorsement

NEW YORK — The ad-
ministrator of the Board of
Jewish Education of New
York City, Jacob M. Snyder,
was scored for endorsing
the Broadway play "Yentl,
denounced by Jewish groups
as "obscene," as being "a
more meaningful (educa-
tional) experience than
reading about this era in
scholarly volumes."
This condemnation came
from the Commission on

.Legislation and Civic Action
of Agudath Israel of Amer-
ica, whose chairman Dr.
Bernard Fryshman severely
criticized the Board of Jew-
ish Education for permit-
ting its name to be exploited
by the producers of "Yentl"
to support their production
of a play which "intellec-
tually traduces Jewish val-
ues and is morally inde-
cent."

Somerset Inn.
Where
the old tradition
of innkeeping
goes on.

The tradition of innkeeping goes way back in
our history. The local inn or tavern was the meet-
ing place for most of the region's social. and
political. events. As such. people met to ex-
change news, discuss their problems, conduct
business, and especially to enjoy the company
of friends.
While playing a significant part in the American
heritage, Inns have always been representative
of their time and place. Whether it be GI staid
New England tavern or Wild West stagecoach
stop, visitors were assured comfort and conviv-
iality.
It is in this great tradition of a regional center
serving as a gathering place that the Somerset
Inn was established.

`Israel Seeks
Soviet Ties'

NEW YORK — An Egyp-
tian magazine said Satur-
day that Israel has asked
the Soviet Union for a re-
sumption of diplomatic rela-
tion's, which were broken
during the 1967 Middle East
War.
The CairO weekly Rose el
_Youssef said, however, Mos-
cow posed several conditions
for such a step, including Is-
raeli recognition of the Pa-
lestine Liberation Organiza-
tion as sole representative of
the Palestinian people.
Rose el Youssef said Is-
raeli Foreign Minister Yigal
Allon met with a "high
ranking Soviet official" at
Schaffhausen, Switzerland
last month to discuss rela-
tions between the two coun-
tries.
In Jerusalem, a foreign
ministry spokesman denied
the report of the meeting.

of the play to cease and
desist from using the BJE
letter in future testimonial
presentations.
The general manager of
the "Yentl" Company, Paul
Berkowsky, has been send-
ing photostats of the Board
of Jewish Education letter
to Jewish groups which have
complained about "Yentl"
as being highly offensive to
Jewish values and tradi-
tions.
Many groups have can-
celled their planned attend-
ance of this play as a result
of the outpouring of protes-
tations from responsible
Jewish organizations, and
the Board of Jewish Educa-
tion letter is part of the
tools utilized by the produ-
cers to regain this audience.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Meyer Friedman of
Brooklyn, 65, who was shot
three times by two assail-.
ants Dec. 26 near his home
in the Williamsbrug section,
was reported by Beth Israel
Hospital to be in stable con
dition.
The Orthodox rabbi was
struck in the head and stom-'
ach in what police said may
have been a robbery attempt
in which the assailants were
frightened off. Rabbi Fried-
man had left his home to go
to Cong. Kehilath Yaacov
two blocks away.
There have been sporadic
clashes in recent years be-
tween Hasidic Jews and
other ethnic groups in the
section but no recent diffi-
culties, police said.
