The meeting was held under the joint auspices of the Rab- binical Assembly's commit- tee on bioethics and the committee on Jewish law and standards. At the seminar it was generally agreed that Jew- ish tradition would accept "brain death" as a criterion of death. Since the cessation of brain activity also means the cessation of sponta- neous breathing and heart beat, the newer criteria are not opposed to those found in traditional Judaism. The speakers at the semi- nar - were Rabbi Seymour Siegel, professor of theology at the Jewish Theological Seminary and also chair- man of the Rabbinical As- sembly's committee on Jew- ish law and standards, and Rabbi Daniel Goldfarb, a re- cently ordained rabbi, who is a lecturer on law and as- Bill Will Protect Home Synagogues JERUSALEM (JTA) -- An Aguda MK introduced a bill in the Knesset that would bar law suits against synagogues located in resi- dential buildings. The measure, proposed by Yehuda Meir Abramowitz, stemmed from a recent case before a Tel Aviv magis- trates court where a tenant group complained that the noise of prayers in a syn- agogue on the premises con- stituted a "public nuisance." The judge ordered the congregation to desist from further use of the flat as a prayer hall. Abramowitz said "there are hundreds of congrega- tions throughout the coun- try which because of lack of sufficient funds had no choice but to rent quarters in residential buildings." He said that very often the landlords, seeking higher rentals, sued the congre- gations on charges of dis- turbing other tenants. According to Abramowitz, his bill would result in greater efforts by both sides to settle disputes amicably. If adopted it would only pro= tect congregations that rent a flat with the stated inten- tion of establishing a syn- agogue, not those which rent premises for residen- tial purposes and subse- quently turn them into a prayer hall. The establishment of "brain death" as a crite- rion, said Rabbi Siegel, was of particular signifi- cance in the case of trans- plants. Patients who are potential donors who are on respirators or heart machines, can be tested for signs of spontaneous breathing and heart beat by removing the appara- tuses for a short while. If there is no spontaneous the blood of an unburied respiratory activity and corpse. there is evidence of brain death then the patient can VOLVO be presumed to be dead.
