He refused to accept a field command offered him by Defense Minister Shi- mon Peres on grounds that it would imply' that he ac- cepted the Agranat panel's conclusion that he was unfit for a regional command or to head a department at general headquarters. In his letter of resigna- tion, Gonen reiterated his charge that the Agranat Committee made him a scapegoat for errors on the Egyptian front. Gonen, a highly re- garded armored division commander during the 1967 Six-Day War, was commander of the south- ern region encompassing Sinai when the Egyptians, in their surprise attack of October 1973, 'crossed the Suez Canal and overran the Bar-Lev Line. The Agranat Committee, appointed by then Premier Golda Meir to investigate the conduct of the Yom Kip- pur War and the events leading up to it, pointed the finger at Gonen as the sen- ior officer most responsible for Israel's setbacks. Gonen disputed the committees findings but was unable to get them reversed. He was given a special assignment at general headquarters pending a final decision on his future military career. The defense minister and chief of staff apparently wanted to retain Gonen in a major command post. Legal counsel indicated that the Agranat Verdict did not preclude his assignment to command a field unit but the general chose to resign instead. Rainstorm Sweeps Through Israel TEL AVIV (JTA) — A 63-year-old Safad woman was feared to have drowned in the Jordan River last week as a result of the tor-, rential rainstorm that swept through Israel. Mrs. Hannah Eisenb;rg, a member of the Soldiers Welfare Committee in Sa- fad, was in a car with four Other committee members, taking gifts to soldiers on the Golan Heights, when the car stalled on a low bridge over the Jordan River, north of the Sea of Galilee. The driver, Yehuda Goren, chairman of the Sa- fad committee, and two women managed to reach high land. But Mrs. Eisenberg and Mrs. Hannah Bram, were swept away by the currents. Mrs. Bram managed to cling to a rock until a helicopter rescued her, but Mrs. Eisen- berg was not found despite a search by police, soldiers, kibutz members and other volunteers. Meanwhile in Tel Aviv the storm caused huge traffic jams in the middle of the city as the traffic lights were knocked out. Several roads were impassible be- cause of the high water.
