Arabs Are Spending Millions
on London's Best Real Estate
BY MARK SEGAL
(Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.)
Arabs have bought some
of London's choicest real
estate for millions of pounds
sterling, and real estate
agents are looking to even
bigger deals in the coming
season. They are even look-
ing at stately homes of Eng-
land which their aristo-
cratic, but no longer rich,
owners have put up for sale.
Real estate agents with
dealings with the oil-weal-
thy sheiks say money ap-
pears to be no object. One
said that nearly every real
estate buyer in London to-
day comes from overseas,
and two out of three are
from the Middle East.
This is a dramatic reflec-
tion of the decline in the
once all-mighty English and
the ascendancy of the desert
rulers. What is also reveal-
ing — and remarkable — is
that the sheiks do much of
their real estate business
with Jewish agents in full
knowledge of their religion.
One Jewish real estate
agent explains that the
Beni Klein, 88
Beni Klein, father-in-law
of Cantor Hyman Adler of
Cong. Bnai David, died Dec.
25 in Los Angeles. He was
88.
Mr. Klein was a leader in
the formation of the Inter-
national Ladies Garment
Workers' Union and was a
leader in the Fairmont Syn-
agogue in Los Angeles.
He is survived by his wife,
Tillie; a daughter, Mrs. Hy-
man J. (Ruth) Adler of
Southfield; four grandchil-
dren and seven great-grand-
children. Interment Los
Angeles.
boom in Arab real estate
purchases was largely an
outcome of the civil war in
Lebanon, where many
wealthy Arabs used to own
property. They prefer Lon-
don because of close ties
with Britain, its language
and culture, its shopping -\
and proximity to continen-
tal Europe, as well as the
good boarding schools they
prefer for their children.
Arabs are . reportedly
spending about 100 million
pounds a year in London.
The British Tourist Author-
ity estimates the number of
visitors from the Middle
East (including Iran) at
about 250,000 a year, and
that they spend about twice
as much as Americans do
(about 200 pounds a head).
The rest of their spending
goes on medical treatment,
new cars, expensive night
clubs, gambling, jewelry
and other luxury goods.
Some shops have signs hung
up in Arabic.
A braham
Not less than 4,000,s
ago, Abraham, first a-
triarch of the Jewish people
and founder of monotheisti
Judaism, left an idolatrous
Mesopotamia with family,
followers and flocks, and
settled in Canaan. The clan J.
multiplied and prospered.
Its perpetuity in Canaan<
was ratified when Abraham
bought a burial-place, ven<
erated to this day in He-
bron, a little south of Jeru-
salem, for himself, for the
Patriarchs Isaac and Jacob, `,
and for the three Ma- /1
triarchs. Jacob was named `\
Israel, after wrestling with
an Angel of God.
