Berman is like a fiddler on the roof — and that's how he is perched, on a roof, in the photo on the cover of his joke, book. While there is really noth- ing new under the sun, and seldom does one hear an anecdote that hadn't been told before, Berman's "Have I Got a Joke for You" (Hart Publishers) is worth search- ing. He did pack in the Jew- ish stories that are most nostalgic into the 192-page _ paperback. The variety of stories gathered in this handy book provides many laughs. There is entertain- ment here for social groups as well as for indi- vidual reading. The illustrations by Har- old Montiel do much to give special flavor to this joke book. Americans Give UN Low Rating NEW YORK — The pub- lic's rating of the United Na- tions' performance has dec- lined to the lowest point in the UN's 30-year history fol- lowing passage of a resolu- tion condemning Zionism as a "form of racism and racial discrimination." According to a recent Gal- lup poll, the great majority of Americans, however, con- tinue to favor retaining U.S. membership. In the latest survey, 33 percent say the UN is doing a "good job" in trying to solve the problems it has to face, while 51 percent say a "poor job." Although the rating given the UN is at a low point, three Americans in every four believe the U.S. should not give up its UN member- ship. Editor, The Jewish News: In these times when neo- anti-Semitism appears un- der the guise of fighting Zionism, it is most timely to learn that the Dr. Reuben Hecht Chair for the Study of Zionism has been funded at the University of Haifa. I have accepted the posi tion of academic adviser on the American scene to over- see this program and am asking for assistance in the following areas: A great many manu- scripts, documents, and Business Briefs Frank E. Leiderman, a representative of the Michi- gan Educational Employes Mutual Insurance Co., was the third ranking insurance salesman in the state for November. The agency spe- cializes in teachers' car in- surance and homeowners and life insurance. Leider- man can be reached at 399-1005. Jewish newspapers of the• relevant period of the Bri- tish regime and British Mandate in Palestine (1917-1948) may be in the possession of private indi- viduals who are not making use of them (often this type of material was left by par- ents who died and is kept for sentimental reasons). It would be of grea sistance to those en in this important resea if owners of such material, as well as of back copies of "New Palestine" and other such journals, would contribute those items to the archives being com- piled under the Chair of Zionism at the University of Haifa. This is the first and only, Chair dedicated to studying' the origins of Zionsim, its socio-economic background, its political struggles and all the other aspects of human interest related to this movement of national liber- ation.
