Bar-Ilan U. Uses Computers
to Diagnose, Treat Diseases

RAMAT GAN — Bar-Ilan
University here is becoming
the scene of many discover-
ies.
Dr. Mitchell Snyder of the
university's computer cen-
ter reports that for the first
time in Israel, computers
,are being used to diagnose
disease. Dr. Snyder said
computers perform several
other medical functions in-
cluding treatment, analysis
and experimentation.
The university also grad-
uated its first class in tran-
slation and offers post-grad-
uate courses in written
translation and in simulta-
neous as well as consecutive
(verbal) translation or inter-
preting.
According to Mrs.'Batia
Frost, one of Israel's lead-
ing translators and a sen-
ior lecturer at the transla-
tors school here, Israel is a
leader in the field and
Jews have a tendency to

they have been the leading
refugees in the 20th Cen-
tury. •
In a recent aliya study at
the university, Dr. Eliezer
Bashan of the department
of Jewish history at the uni-
versity, found that a Jew's
duty to make aliya was
sometimes greater than a
marriage vow.
Dr. Bashan found in his
study that Moroccan rabbis
in the 17th and 18th centu-
ries ruled that if a husband
wished to go to Israel on
aliya and the wife refused,
despite all attempts at per-
suasion, he could pay her
ketuba money and leave her.
At the same time, if the
tables are turned, and the
husband refuses to go, ruled
the rabbis, the wife could
also adopt extreme mea-
sures, including even taking
her children along with her
to Israel.

U.S.-Israel Trade Agreement
Allows Duty-Free Exchange

NEW YORK — More
than 2,700 products manu-
factured in Israel can now
be imported into the United
States duty-free because of
a recent presidential order.
-And, as a result of this
and recent trade agree-
ments, American firms
seeking an overseas indus-
trial location will find that
Israel now offers business
conditions virtually un-
matched by any other coun-
try.
Israel has become the
only country in the world
where an American com-
pany can take advantage of:
• Duty-free access to
many United States mar-
kets.
• Duty-free access to the .
▪ European Common Market.
• A preferential tax posi-
tion, including higher for-
eign tax credits and protec-
tion from double taxation.
The duty-free status ap-
plies to many metal prod-
ucts, fine chemicals, electri-
cal and electronic products,
computers and medical in-
strumentation systems.
Textiles and some semi-fin-
ished goods are excluded un-

der the agreement.
Under the reciprocal
agreement, Israel has at the
same time agreed to reduce
import tariffs on more than
130 U.S. made items.

A new cookbook with the
catchy title of "The Happy
Cooker" has just been pub-
lished by the Women's Com-
mittee of Temple Sinai in
Altanta, Ga. The book has
recipes that are all home-
tested and has many helpful
hints pertaining not only to
cooking but to canning and
freezing and gardening. If
you're interested in order-
ing a copy, send $5.50 plus
$1 for postage (check made
out to Temple Sinai or "The
Happy Cooker") to .Mrs.
Ronald Feinman, 5310 Lon-
don Dr. NW, Atlanta, Ga.
30327. (The cookbook is not
a kosher one but has some
traditional recipes.)
Now for a recipe from-the
book, an excellent dish for a
traditional Friday night
dinner. You'll find that the
chicken will have a terrific
flavor.

3 large chicken breasts, split
1 tsp. salt
Vir cup margarine (pareve)
2 tbsps. enriched all-purpose flour
2 tbsps. sugar
1 /4 tsp. dry mustard
1 /4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1 1 V2 cups orange juice
3 cups hot cooked rice
orange slices and parsley for garnish.
Sprinkle chicken with Y2 tsp. of
salt. Saute in margarine in large skil-
let over medium heat, turning to
brown both sides. Remove chicken
from skillet and set aside. Reserve
one-half to three-quarters of drippings
in pan and discard remainder of drip-
pings. Add flour, sugar, spices and
remaining Y2 tsp. salt to drippings in
skillet; stir to smooth paste. Gradually
stir in orange juice.
Cook over medium heat, stirring
constantly until mixture thickens and
comes to boil. Add chicken breasts.
Cover skillet; simmer over low heat
about 30 minutes, until chicken is
tender. Serve chicken on bed of hot
cooked rice, spooning sauce over. Gar-
nish with orange slices and parsley
sprigs. Serves 6.
