NEW YORK (JTA) —
More than 25,000 handi-
capped persons have been
returned to the mainstream
of community life by Altro
Work Shops, Inc. since its
inception in 1915, according
to Sanford Solender, execu-
tive vice president of the
Federation of Jewish Phi-
lanthropies in New York, of
which Altro is a charter
member.
Speaking at the dedica-
tion of the agency's new fa-
cilities in the Bronx, Solen-
der also said that at least 75
percent of Altro clients re-
ceive public assistance and
he stressed the importance
of the agency's services at
times of severe and wide-
spread economic hardship,
as at present.

Israel's Air Force
Develops Flaws

NEW YORK — Israel's
air force has developed
some serious flaws, though
still considered the best in
the Middle East, according
to Newsweek magazine.
Many veteran technicians
have quite since the 1973
Yom Kippur War for higher
pay with El Al airlines, and
a new -wave of pilots has
been ignoring rules and
pushing planes beyond
safety limits.
According to Newsweek,
13 jet fighters were lost in
1975 on training and profi-
ciency flights. One crewman
was killed when his plane
went'into a spin and was
trapped by a rear-view mir-
ror that had been added as a
gimmick to protect against
attacks from the rear.
Another pilot was
trapped in an Israeli-built
Kfir jet when his ejection
seat caught on a pin left in
place by a careless me-
chanic.
