THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 28 December 26, 1975 Laikin Communally Acclaimed at 80 Family, friends and co- workers in a score of major Jewish movements will join in honoring Benjamin M. Laikin, at a dinner at the Labor Zionist Institute, Sunday evening, in advance of his 80th birthday which he will reach on New Year's Day. A leader in Labor Zion- ism, a scholar who has writ- ten autobiographical works in English and in Yiddish, a linguist and a lover of Yid- dish, Laikin gained national recognition for the aid he has given to cultural institu- tions, to leading Jewish au- thors and to Israeli causes. As a former chairman of the Jewish National Fund and the former Zionist Council, a leader in the Jew- ish Community Council, a volunteer in fund-raising as well as an organizer of Zion- ist groups, Laikin's leader- ship made him an indispen- sable participant in com- munal tasks. Born in Pobelov, a prov- ince of Minsk, Russia, Mr. Laikin came to Baltimore at age 17. He settled in De- troit in 1929 and was in the wiping cloth business here until 1960. Since retiring, Mr. Laikin has devoted time to writing his memoirs, which were published in Yiddish under the title, "Memoirs of a Practical Dreamer." His book has since been pub- lished in English. Mr. Laikin has been asso- ciated with Poale Zion Branch 3 since coming to Detroit. He is a member of Cong. Shaarey Zedek. A par- ticipant in the building of the former Labor Zionist Center, he was active in the, planning for the Labor Zionist Institute on Mid- dlebelt Rd. in Farmington. He held a national posi- tion in the wiping cloth in- dustry, having served as president of the National Association of Wiping Cloth Manufacturers and upon his retirement was named an honorary life member of the association's board of direc- tors. His wife, the late Anna Laikin, shared with him many communal labors as well as in sponsoring liter- ary reading circles. They sponsored many eminent authors, including I. I. Here are two variations to try. 6 medium sweet potatoes Y4 cup margarine th cup dark corn syrup 3 tbsps. pineapple juice concentrate 1 /4 cup brown sugar Cook unpeeled potatoes in boiling water 15 minutes. Peel and cut in half lengthwise. Melt margarine in a cas- serole. Place potatoes in casserole. Mix corn syrup, juice and sugar. Pour over the potatoes. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, basting often. • SHERRIED SWEET POTATOES 8 medium sized sweet potatoes Y2 cup margarine 3 tbsps. brown sugar 1 /3 cup non-dairy coffee creamer (liquid) 2 tbsps. sherry wine Boil potatoes until tender. Peel and mash. Whip potatoes with remaining ingredients and bake in a 350-degree oven 25 minutes or until top is brown. Serves 8.
