Get On The Right Track!'

The Best of Everything

By DANNY RASKIN

TALIAN-AMERICAN CAFE

THE SIGN OUTSIDE
SPELLS it "Royal Bangal"
and the menu reads the
same way . . . but Royal
Bangal or Royal Bengal, it's
still the right place . . . only
three weeks old on Nine
Mile Rd. about 1 /2 block west
of Woodward in Ferndale
. . . This new eating spot
serving Indian, Pakistani
and Bengalese food has one
of the largest and most di-
versified menus of its kind
anywhere . . . There is a
reason . . . The four owners
are all Indian restaurant
men, with three having ver-
satile backgrounds in the
many dishes being served
. . . Momosir Ali cooked
Indian food for 12 years in
London, England, including
at the famous Gaylord Res-
taurant; Oajib Ullah spent
seven years cooking and
owning two Indian restau-
rants in Scotland and
Wales, and Tunur Rahman,
was eight years in England
plus owning his own Indian
restaurant in New York . . .
The fourth owner is M.A.
Matin, whose culture im-
bues him with the love of
fine Indian food . . . All are
extremely polite, humble
and very eager to please.
Against the background
of Indian music, white ta-
blecloths, red carpeting, red
velvet foil walls and high
back black chairs, Royal
Bengal stands out as an
excellent dining spot, with
every dish having a very dis-
tinctly different taste, in-
cluding the various breads
. . . It is spotlessly clean
and not just because of new-
ness . . . Indian restaura-
teurs are noted for their
neatness . . . These men
have backgrounds that con-
tinue on into their new spot,
which in time, is expected to
be the pilot for a chain of
Royal Bengal restaurants.

Tunur Rahman waited on
us with grace and patience
. . . in a seemingly unlim-
ited selection of foods that
may sound like a lot . . .
but doesn't even dent the
menu . . . that's how many
items are on it . . . We had
four appetizers, small whole
Shish Kabab (not on a
skewer) within onions,
green pepper and tomato;
Pakura, vegetable fritters;
two Somasas, a meat turno-
ver and a vegetable turno-
ver; and Chana Bhuna, sea-
soned chick peas . . . Then
came two soups, Mulliga-
tawny (vegetable, lentil and
tomato) and the exotic Coco-
nut Soup, made with milk
and raisins . . . In between
the two courses, Rahman
brought us some Papadam,
vegetable wafers thinner
than paper . . . With our
dinner came Parata bread
and Puri, a deep fried
puffed bread . . . The
courses were: Shrimp
Bhuma, Lamb Dopiaza,
Tarka Dall, Bindi Bhajee
(okra with pimento, etc.)
and Chicken and Mushroom
Biriani in a bed of rice . . .
Few people make desserts
better than folks from India
. . . Rahman brought us
four: Firni, Gulab Jam, Jila-
bee and Rosagula.
Our visit to the New
Royal Bengal restaurant
was different and taste-tin-
gling delightful . . We
have had Indian food before,
but not the wide variety .. .
and as mentioned, the menu
listing is huge . . . The own-
ers are extremely polite and
helpful . . . and should you
want an explanation of the
food, it will be given with
much graciousness . . . If
you've never had this food
before, they will make
suggestions . . . and you
may be sure it will be to
your tasty liking . . . There
are almost 150 items, in-
cluding 100 entrees, meat or
vegetarian, and combination
dinners for one, two, three,
four or more . . . plus an all
vegetable dinner.
Royal Bengal is open
seven days, Monday through
Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 12
midnight . . . Sundays, 3
p.m. to 11 p.m. . . . The
menu is explanatory in
which dishes are very mild,
mild, dry, sweet & sour,
fairly hot and hot . . . Treat
your taste buds to an experi-
ence we're sure both you
and they will enjoy.
GOLDEN DOME Res-
taurant on Livernois and
Coolidge has been bought by
brothers Fon Lim and Yat
Lim . . . and will open in
February as the New China
Restaurant.
FAMILIAR FACES
with Pam Martin at Fran-
cesco's on Michigan in Dear-
born, is an exciting aggrega-
tion, with beautiful
arrangements of standards,
show tunes, pops and soft
rock . . . Pam on the vocals
is without doubt one of this
area's finest singers . . .
with versatility that pumps
with enthusiasm.
