"Sister Arline Cherrystone Clams" at six of his restaurants in Michigan and Ohio have five cents added to the price of each clam . . . The extra five cents is matched by Chuck and passed along to Dr. Arline Schmeer, direc- tor of marine studies at the American Medical Center at Denver, Colo.. . . A Domin- ican nun, Sister Arline's 14-year study has shown that a substance called mer- cenene, found in Littleneck, cherrystone and quahog clams, kills cancer cells in tissue culture . . . Although the substance has been ef- fective in mice and tissue cultures, it has not been synthesized for use on hu- man beings . . . This would require five more years of research, but funds for the project are running short . . . Sister Arline emphas- izes that eating clams is not recommended as a substi- tute for recognized medical treatment of cancer. A LOOKSEE BACK WHEN . . .
