Arab Girls in Israel Face More Problems Than Jews

man could give a woman a
divorce without her consent.
Now there is only 50 percent
illiteracy among Arab
women in Israel.
Today more than 250
Arab grls study in Israeli
universities. The first Arab
women have already gotten
diplomas as pharmacists,
doctors, teachers and em-

TEL AVIV — In theIsi-

about the problems of Arab
girls in Israel.
A student, Agbarie, told
the editor Zvia Cohen, that
Arab women have made
great progress during the
first years of Israel state-
hood. The Israeli laws put
an end to bigamy among the

Collegei Condemn UN Anti-Zion Rule

GROSSINGER, N.Y. —
American college campuses,
otherwise politically apath-
etic-these days, ignited with
Jewish student protests over,
the UN's equating Zionism
with racism, a survey by
Bnai Brith Hillel Founda-
tions reported.
Rallies and demonstra-
tions,. petition-gathering
and teach-ins on Zionism
erupted on scores of cam-
puses, with crowds of 200
to 1,500 denouncing the an-
ti-Semitic implications of
the UN 'resolution.
The survey also noted -
that "for the first time since
the 1967 war" Christian
clergy on campus, a group
that, by and large, has been
silent on, if not outwardly
hostile toward, Israeli polit-
ical stances, were -outspoken
and forceful in "condemning

the anti-Zionist resolution.
-\ College sentiment was
also reflected in the cam-
pus press, which is' often
critical of Israel and, sym-
pathetic to the aspirations
of Palestinian Arabs,
Fishman said.
A spot survey of editorial
comment on 30 of the laig-
est campuses showed wide-
spread condemnation of the
UN resolution. "The' Michi-
gan Daily" of the University
of Michigan in a typical edi-
ial, called it a "document
den with hypocrisy . . .
rooted almost entirely in
fallacy."

who wish to study, meet
difficulties to find a room
-or apartment in the cities.
They have to return each
evening to their distant
villages.
Only a few Arab girls
have the opportunity' to
study in universities. A few
of them finish studies in
high school. They have diffi-
culty leahiing Hebrew.

TEL AVIV — (ZINS) —
During the 1950's Ben-Gur-
- ion wanted to convert Be-
douin families roaming the
desert and had even ob-
tained the agreement of the
late Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak
Halevi Herzog, it was re-
vealed to a gathering of reli-

eral Geva.
He added, however, that
the plan never came to frui-
tion because of the army's
opposition, who were intent
on employing the Bedouins
in the gathering intellig-
ence.
