Negotiations With Arabs at an End, Dulzin Says

NEW YORK — Negotia-
tions with the Arabs are at
an end, with no further
step-by-step agreements
foreseen, according to Leon
Dulzin, treasurer of the
Jewish Agency who is serv-
ing as its acting chairman
and of the World Zionist Or-
;ganization, who- spoke be-
fore the national executive
committee of the Zionist Or-
ganization of America, at
. the ZOA House recently.

According to Dulzin,

be formed a government of
national unity."

major reason for Israel's
political difficulties was the
"inability to articulate its
position in a coherent and
tough manner. Were it to
present its position in such a
manner, the Israeli stand-
ing in Washington would be
much more solid."
At its meeting, the 20A
national executive commit-
tee adopted resolutions ap-
pealing to President-Ford
not to weaken Israel's secu-
rity and viability by recog-
nizing the PLO and having
Israel withdraw from the
West Bank and Gaza Strip
in favor of a Palestinian
state.

Dulzin said Sunday at a
UJA meeting, Israel has al-
ways "tragically" presented
the Palestinian problem
"poorly" to world public
opinion.
"The present government
is the weakest in Israel's
history," Dulzin charged.
He said not only do the var-
ious Cabinet members make
contradictory statements
but individual ministers
make contradictory state-
- ments on different days.
ZOA President Dr. Joseph
P. Sternstein said that a

Conversion of a Basketball . Player

BY HASKELL COHEN

(Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.)

After scouting the coun-
try, I came upon a very fine
player, a little too slow for
big-time professional
U.S.A. basketball, but ideal
for Israel and European
play. This _player, out of
Utah State, is Jim Boat-
right.
Boatright impressed_ me
with enthusiasm and desire
to play in Israel. For the Eu-
ropean Cup Games, in
which Tel Aviv Maccabi is
involved annually, it is
premissible to use two for-
eign' players and they don't
have to be of the Jewish
faith.
So far as Boatright's play
was concerned it was out-
standing and the Tel Aviv
basketball afficionados took
to him both as a player and
an individual. Very well be-
haved and- mannerly, Boat-
right won ainultitude of
friends both on and off the
court.

This year, Boatright
was invited_back to rejoin
the Maccabi Five, and
jumped at the opportunity.

It develops now that Boat- next year.It is interesting to

tached to Israel that he Boatright's on the Maccabi
has decided to convert to squad last year, for Euro-
Judaism. Apparently he pean Cup play only, was Bill

convert, but it-is an interest-
ing sidelight to Boat-right's
desire to convert.
As a result of his conver-
sion Boatright is now per-
mitted to play in all of Tel
Aviv Maccabi's home games
as well as the European
matches. Furthermore, a
place will be made for an-
other American to replace
him as a.Maccabi represent-
ative. in European Cap play

One cannot very well ac-
cept Boatright's conversion
as a frivolous move just to
benefit his basketball ca-
reer. Jim is a clear thinking,
intellectual sort of individ-
ual whose pep talks before
international games involv-
ing Maccabi Tel Aviv have,
been very inspiring and
tinged with a strong Zionist_
flavor.

Editor Uri Avneri Attacked on Street

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Pol-
ice are holding a 30-year-old
former mental -patient for
the attempted murder of
Uri Avneri, a former Knes-
set member and editor of
the weekly Haolam Hazeh.
Avneri was rushed to the
hospital with multiple stab
wounds allegedly inflicted
by the suspect outside his
home. He was reportedly
stabbed in the face, chest,
stomach and legs and was
undergoing surgeiy. The
latest report from the hospi-
tal said his condition Was
not serious.
Although Avneri is 'a bit-
terly controversial political
figure because of his advo-
cacy..of Israeli negotiations
with the Palestine Libera-
tion 'Organizatittn, police
said the assault on him had
no political motivation.

The suspeCt, whose
name was not immediately
disclosed, is the same man
who tried to kill Avneri
two years ago. At that
time he was not prosecuted
but sent to a mental insti-
tution from which he was
subsequently released.

the suspect claimed at the
time that Avneri was about
to publish an article in Hao-
lam Hazeh labeling him a
spy.
