The year book is published by the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Publication Society of America. In the article, based on the National Jewish Popula- tion Study conducted under the auspices of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, Fred. Mas- sarik points out that the movement to the suburbs has resulted in the Nassau- Suffolk area having a Jew- ish population of 605,000,• which is larger than that of NEW YORK — The Jew- ish population. of the Greater New York area de- clined by 383,000 between 1962 and 1970-71, and the same period saw a substan- tial exodus of Jews from the city to the suburbs. In addi- tion, the proportion of young children under five years of age in the overall total of 1,998,000 Jews who currently live in Greater New York also declined. This is disclosed in an ar- ticle on "The Basic Charac- teristics of the Greater New York Jewish Population" in the 1976 edition (Volume 76) `America Is Not in Israel's Pocket' TEL AVIV (JTA) — Pre- mier Yitzhak Rabin warned Israelis and Israel's leaders not to regard American friendship as "in our pocket." Addressing the monthly meeting of the Israel-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Ra- bin said that American friendship for Israel is qual- ified by its own interests in the area. The U.S., he stated, will not support Is- rael if there is a danger of superpower confrontation. America's interest in the Middle East is to achieve peace, the Premier said, but until that is achieveds the U.S. wants the area to re- main calm. In its relations with the U.S., Israel has to take into account both America's friendship and her interests in the area, Rabin observed. The continued friendship with the U.S. is important for Israel, he said, and it de- pends on Israel to see to it that the frienship continues. He added that unless Israel decreases its economic aid 'demands from the U.S. "our friendship may be dam- aged." But, he pointed out, if the U.S. wants peace and tranquility in the area a strong Israel is a pre-requis- ite. Have you heard about the worldi largest Chanukah celebration? Arabian Peninsula Drift Found NEW YORK — Photo- graphs taken by American astronauts on the joint U.S.- Soviet space mission in July confirm that the whole Ara- bian peninsula is slowly ro- tating toward Asia and that the region of the Golan Heights is probably geologi- cally pivotal. Scientists who analyzed the photographs detected a fan-shaped complex of fault lines extending north and eastward from the Golan. Dr. el-Baz said the lines are believed to be the final portion of a geologic drift line already existing. The current theory of con- tinental drift holds that the Arabian peninsula is drift- ing slowly eastward in a way that will ultimately close off the Persian Gulf. Evidence of that drift was revealed in the photographs from the joint space ven- Package rates cover ac- comodations, a daily Is- raeli breakfast, ground connections between air- port and hotel, and special events at the fashion show. Dr. el-Baz, director of the Smithsonian Center for Earth and Planetary Stud- ies for the National Air and Space Museum, said the fault line was not known to extend beyond the region northwest of the Golan Heights prior to the appear- ance of the Apollo-Soyuz photographs. Dr. el-Baz said the fan-shaped pattern re- vealed in the new photv shows the movement of thi Arabian land mass to be a slow rotation, rather than simply an eastward drift.
