THE PET,R9AT: IEWIS,H NEWS . Rabbi Edward. Sandrow Dies NEW YORK - Rabbi Ed- ward Sandrow, a distin- guished leader in Conserva- tive Judaism, died Tuesday. He was 68. Noted scholar, a leader in many important move- ments, Rabbi Sandrow re- tired from his pulpit at Cong. Beth El in Long Is- land in 1971 to become a special consultant to the chancellor of the Jewish of Rabbis and the Rabbini- cal Assembly of America, vice president of the Jewish Chaplains Association and chairman of the chaplaincy commission of the Jewish Welfare Board. Rabbi Sandrow was a frequent contributor to An- glo-Jewish periodicals. Well known in Detroit, having spoken at numerous Conservative Jewish gather- ings, Rabbi Sandrow's last appearance here was as guest speaker at the testi- monial dinner in honor of Rabbi Jacob Segal of Adat Shalom Synagogue who died recently. - Gilbert Savransky, Ohio ZOA Official RABBI SANDROW Seminary and a • Theological . visiting professor of pas- toral psychiatry there. From 1954 to 1956 he was visiting professor of homi- lectics at the Jewish Theo- logical Seminary of Amer- ica, and a fellow at the Lehman Institute of Ethics from 1962 to 1963. CLEVELAND (JTA) - Gilbert Savransky, an hon- orary vice president of the Zionist Organization of America and local Jewish leader, died. Dec. 12 at age 51. Mr. Savransky, a Cleve- land attorney, his wife and another couple were about to enter a downtown Cleve- land housing complex known as Park Center about 11 p.m. last Friday when three youths pulled up in a car. One youth attempted to grab a purse from one of the two women, and a second youth, without any provoca- tion, shot Mr. Savransky in the abdomen. He was pro- nounced dead on arrival at a hospital. Police are holding three 16-year-old suspects. Mr. Savransky, who lived in suburban Tepper Pike, was scheduled to be re- elected a trustee of the Jew- ish .Community Federation of Cleveland. He was a member of ZOA's National Executive Committee and a former ZOA president in Cleveland and a member of Bnai Brith. Julia A. Dushkin NEW YORK - Julia Aronson Dushkin, long prominent in Jewish philan- thropic affairs here and in Israel, died Dec. 10 in Israel at age 80. Before moving to Israel 20 years ago with her husband. Dr. Alexander M. Dushkin, former professor at Hebrew University and former exec- utive vice president of the Jewish Education Commit- tee here, Mrs. Dushkin was active in Hadassah.
