Rev. Refutes Israel Racism

Analyzing the values and
justice-seeking elements of
Zionism, the Rt. Rev. Rich-
ard Emrich, in his column
in the Detroit News on Sun-
day, related an incident in-
volving the kibutzim in Is-
rael and his son's services in
one of them. He told how
Rabbi Leon Fram had in-
spired that interest.
In his description of that
occurrence, Bishop Emrich
wrote:
Rabbi Leon Fram and I
were driving some years
ago on New Year's Day to
Lansing to take part in the
inauguration of G. Men-
nen Williams as governor,
something we did together
a number of times. My
elder son was in the car
with us; and when, in the
course of the conversation,
Rabbi Fram mentioned a
"kibutz" my son asked
the rabbi the meaning of
the world.
"A kibutz," said the
rabbi in effect, "is a work
camp is Israel. They exist
for the purpose of rebuild-
ing the land. The people in
them are 20th Century pi-
oneers, and sometimes
scholarships for the travel
are 'given to people who
would like to volunteer for
hard work."
/ When my son, who has
never missed many oppor=
tunities, asked how one ap-
plied for a scholarship, the,,
rabbi kindly told him. The--

our son was on his way to
work in a kibutz under the
blazing sun in the north of
Israel near the city 'of Dan.
. As he traveled, he went to
the Arab countries first and
then entered Israel, for to
enter Arab lands from Is-
rael was at that time forbid-
den by the Arab countries.
This, plug the fact that a
Christian young man was
given such a scholarship to
work in Israel, seems to
our family scarcely the
action of a racist body.
On the contrary, it is the
policy of an open group, a
modern nation, a free peo-
ple in an area where little
freedom exists.
