THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
U.S. Denies Alsop Charges
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The State Department de-
nied Monday a report by
O'" -4"''Joseph Alsop that Israeli
Premier Yitzhak Rabin had
assured the United States
last March that Israel would
be willing to pull back from
the Mitle and Gidi Passes in
the Sinai as part of a disen-
gagement agreement with
Egypt. The pullback was
part of the Disengagement
agreement signed in Sep-
tember.
- Department spokesman
John Trattner said Alsop in
an article in the New York
Times Sunday Magazine,
said that Rabin assured Sec-
retary of State Henry Kis-
singer he could carry the
Israeli government with
him on the question of with-
drawal.
"No such assurances were
given by the Prime Minister
to the Secretary," Trattner
said.
He refused to comment
on Alsop's charge that Is-
rael had participated in an
effort to have Kissinger re-
moved as Secretary.
