Sweden's UN Vote Jolts Israel Tie

At the same time, some
politicans and newspapers
attacked Prime Minister
Olof Palme's government
for helping elevate' the
PLO status, for being the
only Western nation in the
Security Council to vote on
the side of the PLO and for
taking up a "fashionable"
ideological position.

NEW YORK Relations
between. Sweden and Israel,
two.nations that have main-
tained strong diplomatic
and ideological links, have
been jolted by Sweden's cru-
cial vote last week in the
United Nations Security
Assembly.
With Sweden providing
the pivotal vote to invite the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization to the Council for a
formal debate on "Israeli
aggression" against Leba-
non, the Stockholm Govern-
ment buoyed the diplomatic
status of the PLO and ena-
led the group to be treated
as a member nation of the
UN.
Within 'days of the vote,
accordirig to the New York
-Times, the Israeli Ambassa-
dor to Sweden, Avner Idan,
was summoned home for
consultations, a widely pub-
licized move that upset gov-
ernment officials in Stock-
holm.

Anders Wijkman, a vocal
member of Parliament in
the Opposition Moderate
Party said: "The Govern-
ment says a dialogue will
lead to peace and that's why
they voted this way.

mystic Uri Geller has come
under fire recently by those
who have branded him a
fraud who uses conventional
magic tricks to mislead the
public.
Many magicians have said
they have duplicated most
of his feats and that several
scientists who once pro-
fessed belief in Geller's
work have since changed
their minds.
Milbourne Christopher,
chairman of the occult" in-
vestigations committee of
the Society of American
Magicians in his new book,
"Mediums, Mystics and the
Occult," said that "Geller is
at his -ingenious best in la-
boratories where he is being
observed . by scientists who
believ.e he has extraordinary
ESP ability and think —
without justification — that
they have ruled out every
possibility of fraud. Unless
an expert in deception is
present while such tests are
being conducted, these ex-
periments are as valid as a
four-dollar bill," Christo-
pher wrote.

pairing" feats found that
jewelers were not im-

the oil and the watch would

Israel Consul
Appointed in NY

NEW YORK (JTA) — Uri
Ben Ari has been named Is-
rael Consul General in New
York.
Ben Ari, 50, who replaced
David. Rivlin, now Ambassa-
dor to Norway, was born in
Berlin and came to Pales-
tine in 1939.
He is a brigadier general
in the reserves and was dep-
uty commander of the
southern command on the
Egyptian front during the
Yom Kippur War.
