His Democratic front, an alliance of the pro-Moscow Rakah Communists and lo- cal -professionals and aca- demicians, captured 11 of the 17 city council seats as- suring Communist control of the largest Arab city in Israel. The voting was orderly and the police re-enforcements sent into Nazareth had little to do. The Communist list swept the field, taking be- tween 70-80 percent of the votes cast at each of the 26 polling stations. When the results were announced, Ziad and his jubilant sup- porters drove through the rain drenched city in a shouting, horn-honking victory celebration. The victory of Ziad, who is a Rakah member of the Knesset, was a foregone conclusion even before the Israel Cancels Wrestling Meet After 3 Top Teams Drop Out Czech, Spanish Jews Attend WJCongress Confab in London 'TEL AVIV — Israel has cancelled the Asian weigh- tlifting championships, which were to have been held Nov. 27-29, because the three strongest teams have dropped out. Israel was chosen as the place for the champion- ships at the last congress of the 20-nation Asian Weigh- tlifting Federation (AWF), held during last year's Teh- eran Asian Games. Both Israbl and Iraq applied to host the meet, but Israel was chosen by seven votes to five. The AWF membership in- cludes Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, as well as Indonesia and Pakistan, with which Jerusalem has no diplo- matic relations. The only definite entries for the tournament along With Israel were Australia, Thailand and the Philip- pines, all of which planned to send very small teams, Lalkin reported. According to the Jerusa- lem Post, under the cir- cumstances, it was not felt worthwhile to go ahead with the championships, sched- uled to inaugurate what was planned to be an annual event. This was the first time in years that a Czech Jewish representative came to the West to attend such a gath- ering. The leader of the remtiant of the once-great Czech Jew- ish community, who at- tended the meeting last week as an observer, said that the 7,000 Jews cur- rently residing in Czechoslo- vakia receive religious, cul- tural and welfare services from the Federation. Dr. Bass said that the federation receives sup- port from the Czech au- thorities who are urging the federation to find a new rabbi. The commu- nity, he reported, has been without a spiritual leader since Rabbi Sicher died at the age of 95• more than five years ago. The federation is also bur- dened with caring for 400 cemeteries, most of which are in a state of neglect, Dr. Bass said. They are situated in areas where Jews had long vanished. Samuel Toledano, vice president of the Madrid Jewish community, who at- tended the WJCongress meeting as head of the Spanish delegation, said that Spanish Jews are deeply interested in having post-Franco Spain become properly integrated into Europe. He said _Spain's 10,000 Jews enjoyed prosperity and equality in religious rights. They live in 11 communities, With Madrid the largest cen- ter with 3,000 Jews. The • Spanish Jewish leader said they were pro- foundly interested in voting began. The clumsy, heavy-handed attempts by Israeli government officials to influence Nazareth voters to reject the Communist list in favor of the Labor Party- backed candidate, George' Sa'ad, backfired and proba- bly increased the size of Ziad's victory, Israeli ob- servers said. A police spokesman told The Jerusalem- Post that a Rehov Trumpeldor flat — formerly a massage parlor but now advertising itself -in newspapers as a matrimon- ial agency — had been raided.
