fronts. By 1943, the study
said, Soviet officers were
receiving detailed informa-
tion on atomic research by
their allies — England, Can-
ada and the United States.
• A 1960 report from a
source in East Germany on
Dr. Klaus Fuchs, termed in
the other study the first
Atomic spy for the Soviet
military, asserting that he
carried out "extensive calcu-
lations for a breeder reactor
with a relatively high burn-
out of about 60 percent"
while in prison in Britain.
• A CIA report to the
Federal Bureau of Investi-
gation dated May 19, 1950,
citing a Nazi security book-
let as having listed Dr.
Fuchs before the 1941 Ger-
man invasion of the Soviet
Union as an "extremely
dangerous security risk"
who might be used by the
Russians.
The files, released under
the Freedom of Information
Act on petition of Michael
and Robert Meeropol, the
Rosenberg's sons, revealed
that Harry Gold, who was
arrested as a spy courier,
was described as a "neurotic
and hostile personality with
traits adding up to imbal-
ance" in a court-ordered
psychiatric report six
months before his testi-
mony in the Rosenberg
atomic spy trial.
Other documents show
repeated but unsuccessful
efforts of Morton Sobell's
imprisonment — he served
nearly 18 years — to induce
him to give up his protesta-
tions of innocence. Sobell
was sentenced to a 30-year
prison term for conspiracy
to commit espionage.

revealed that the FBI
made several efforts to
expand the charges
against the defendants,
Ethel and Julius Rosen-
berg.
The documents show FBI
complaints that Sobell's al-
leged interest in classified
fire-control data had not
been brought up in the trial.
They indicate that agents
had leads on the possible
receipt by Julius Rosenberg
of aerodynamics research
reports but could not estab-
lish sufficient evidence.
Another disclosure, first
made public on Nov. 21, was
that David Greenglass, the
star witness, told the prose-
cution before the trial that
his sister, Ethel Rosenberg,
was never present when
Greenglass gave his broth-
er-in-law, Julius, a complete
description of the atomic
bomb in the fall of 1945.
At the federal court trial
in New York on March 12,
1951, Greenglass testified
that Mrs. Rosenberg had
not only been present but
also had typed his hand-
written notes and helped
correct his grammar.
The FBI files are rife
with leads followed up
with varying results based
on statements from "a
kow, who was described as
"a confidence man," had
told the bureau that
"Rosenberg was appre-
hensive lest the FBI learn
of his obtaining passport
photographs in June 1950
for himself and his fam-
ily." Ben Schneider, the
photographer, was the
final surprise prosecution
witness on rebuttal.
A memorandum to Bel-
mont from an agent, C. E.
Hennrich, said that Tarta-
kow had a "most unsavory
record" and might be trying
to "con" his way out of
prison.
