TEL AVIV — Signs of oil
were found at an experi-
mental well near A-Tur in
Sinai on the Gulf of Suez.
The find was made by the
Government's Oil Explora-
tion Project — formerly the
oil exploration division of
Netivei Neft.
Examination of soil sam-
ples showed signs of oil but
it is not yet known whether
the well could be of com-
mercial value, according to
Yitzhak Sirkin, chairman of
the board of Netivei Neft.
He said that several years
ago the company has made
plans for exploring possible
oil sites in Sinai and had
recently started digging.

THE PRESIDENTS' PRESIDENT: The story is told
about Dr. Chaim Weizmann, the first President of Israel.
Following the establishment of the state of Israel, he
visited President Truman and presented him with a Torah
scroll in the White House. Truman, in a relaxed mood, told
Dr. Weizmann of the difficulties he had encountered in his
determination to see the Jewish state come into existence
through the United Nations. "It is not easy to be a Presi-
dent," he said. Dr. Weizmann, known for his good humor,
retorted: "I know it . . . I am a president of thousands of
presidents . . . In Israel, every Jew thinks he is the
president."
Rabbi Israel Miller, the mild-mannered chairman of
the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Or-
ganizations, can say the same. He is now completing his
term of office heading a body composed of presidents of 32
Jewish organizations. Every decision of the Conference
must be made by consensus.
A POPULAR LEADER: Soft-spoken, scholarly, and
effective in presenting his views, Rabbi Miller won for the
Conference attention and respect in the White House, De-
partment of State and in other high government offices in
Washington. Among Jewish masses he is today the most
popular leader.
Tens of thousands of American Jews who never knew
of the existence of the Conference — and what it stands for
— are now well aware of its function as an instrument of
American Jewry in taking collective action to enhance the
security of Israel. Many of these Jews answered the call of
the Conference this year and came from various cities to
participate in the mass demonstrations in the heart of New
York.
Rabbi Miller, always among the principal speakers at
these huge demonstrations, has succeeded in reaching very
important non-Jewish personalities to appear on the speak-
er's platform. This did not pass unnoticed by Arab diplo-
mats in the United Nations.
He has distinguished himself in Jewish communal
work by being active in the leadership of numerous national
Jewish organizations. He now holds the post of vice presi-
dent of Yeshiva University and is one of the vice presidents
who were chosen to govern the university following the re-
tirement of Dr. Belkin as university president. He served as
president of the American Zionist Federation, and is now a
member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency.
A UNIFIED PLATFORM: I remember the time
when the Conference of Presidents of Jewish Organizations
was established by Dr. Nahum Goldmann. He made it a
point to ask me to call it "The Presidents' Club," when writ-
ing about it. This was because at that time some organiza-
tions — especially the Bnai Bri-th — hesitated to participate
as an organization. They did not mind their president par-
ticipating, but only as an individtral and not as a representa-
tive of the organization.
In 1966, the members of the Presidents Conference
voted to become a representative body of organizations in-
stead of a body of presidents. Since that time, the Confer-
ence has provided a unified platform on which the leader-
ship of its 30 constituent groups meets to share
information, exchange views and pursue cooperative action
to insure the security of the Jewish people in Israel.
